ER nurse Taylor, still grieving her husband's death, moves to San Diego to start a new life. Seth, an old friend and crisis chaplain, reconnects with Taylor. I thought this book was very good and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

"Step by Step" by author Candace Calvert is the second in her Crisis Team Series published by Tyndale House. It is a 400 page Christian contemporary romance/hospital crisis novel following "By Your Side" Book One. Author Calvert is a nurse giving her insight into her material.

This story is about Emergency Room nurse Taylor Cabot who is also a crisis chaplain. Three years ago her husband was killed in an accident. Since then she has been trying to get her life back together which included moving to San Diego. She now is engaged to a plastic surgeon, but things get complicated when Seth Donovan, crisis chaplain, comes back into her life

Author Calvert has a wonderful writing style. Her characters are full of depth and emotion. They are well defined, well rounded, and very relatable. It is easy to become invested in Taylor's life early in the book. In keeping with trends and the title of her novel, the author even has Taylor wearing a fitness bracelet to measure her steps and calories. She becomes a new friend. Other characters are easy to like or not like. The author has described them in a way that I felt like I knew them. The storyline is well researched and well written. The author has a way of drawing readers in with her smooth style. It was very heart wrenching in parts and uplifting in others. I could feel the character's grief, sadness, and joy. There is action, mystery, romance, and inspiration in this page turner. God is mentioned in this Christian novel, and trusting in His timing is one of my favorite inspirational messages of the book.

I would recommend this to anyone that likes contemporary medical crisis novels. It was well written and hard to put down. I rated it a 4 out of 5 stars. I received a copy of this book from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

After the death of her husband, Taylor Cabot moves to San Diego as one of the steps on her Survival List. She wants her list completed by the third anniversary of Gregs accident which is looming on the horizon. She has decided to step away from the Crisis Team work she was involved with in Sacramento and has been cutting back on those hours. Seth Donovan knows Taylor is an excellent fit with the Crisis Team but wonders why Taylor has been less than communicative since she left Sacramento. An opportunity to spend a couple of weeks in San Diego helping train a new class of Crisis Team volunteers is just what he needs to find out how Taylor is really doing.

I loved the tie-in from the title of Step by Step to Taylors life planned in steps to her fitness routine which counted steps. Ms. Calvert did an amazing job of bringing all these ideas together. As one character put it, I finally learned to accept that my healing, my new relationshipsand my future would move forward according to Gods timing, not mine. Im not worried about counting the steps. If Im going in the right direction, if Im on the right path, Ill feel that certainty in my soul. I liked Taylor, but I thought she was letting others influence her a bit too much in the beginning although she felt she was making the decisions on her own. She also wasnt being honest with herself about how she was doing in her grieving process over the loss of her husband. Kasie Beckett was a darling. I wanted to know how her story ended, but it was still dangling at the end instead of neatly tied up. Seth was a wonderful hero. He had faced some tough times in his life, but they shaped him into the man he became and pointed him to his need for Christ. He was strong and supportive when Taylor needed him. Book three in this series (to be released in the fall) will be about Sloane Wilder, and she was prominent in book two. This surprised me somewhat, but Ms. Calvert tied Sloanes story with Taylors in a rather unexpected way. I cant say I liked Sloane in this book, but I did have compassion for her. Obviously Sloanes story was left unfinished which makes me eagerly anticipate the next book. As for this one, I laughed; I cried; I pondered. Absolutely recommended!

I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

Oh, I do so love the way Candace Calvert delves into the rawness of real life. She doesn't hold back any punches but she also laces her stories with faith-fueled hope. Step By Step is just such a book.

Life is complicated -- especially when you are struggling to move on after a profound loss. Both Taylor and Seth are doing just that with varying degrees of success. Complicated lives lead to complicated relationships and that would be an understatement where these two are concerned. Rich dialogue carries emotion through every scene. Taylor with her pre-planning and constant list checking. Seth with his heart to follow where God leads no matter how uncomfortable that might be. The angst of their love story plays out against the chaotic backdrop of a bustling hospital.

I found the Crisis Response details particularly fascinating. Not sure if we have similar programs in Canada but I can see the huge benefit the volunteer team members would bring to a myriad of tough situations. Brings an extra edge to an already gripping story.

Soul-stirring and faith-bending from start to finish. A breathtaking read.

Candace Calvert in her new book, Step by Step Book Two in the Crisis Team series published by Tyndale House Publishers brings us into the lives of Taylor Cabot and Seth Donovan.

From the Back Cover: Three years after a tragic accident left her a widow, ER nurse Taylor Cabot is determined to move on, checking off one item after another on her survival list. Her relationship with a handsome plastic surgeon even gives her hope for the last point―fall in love again. At least until crisis chaplain Seth Donovan steps back into her life, reawakening unanswered questions about her husbands death.

While in San Diego to train community volunteers, Seth hopes to learn why Taylor is backing away from the crisis team and from their friendship. But nothing prepares him for the feelings that arise when he sees Taylor again . . . and sees her moving on with another man.

When a community crisis hits home and puts lives at risk, emotions run high and buried truths are unearthed. Will hope make the survival list?

Every book that Candace Calvert writes is better than the previous one which means that Step by Step is the best one so far. There is a community crisis that puts the lives of both Taylor and Seth at risk. Both of them have issues that are bigger than they are and is going to require God to heal them if they expect to move forward. This book starts out exciting and then Ms. Calvert just notches up the excitement factor. Step by Step is a thriller with all kinds of danger that is a lot like a roller coaster with dips and turns and drops that you really dont see coming. However, it is also a romance that builds as Taylor and Seth have to learn to trust each other. Candace Calvert knows how to weave a captivating story with wonderful characters that breathe. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.
