We open with a scene that will definitely capture your attention as we are introduced to Taylor and Seth.
What I loved about this beginning of this book was that there really wasn't any romantic connection between these two to start it off but I knew something would change with this eventually. Taylor really didn't even seem to like Seth and did not want to be around him.
There is also the mystery of what happened on the day Greg died. Taylor wants answers but isn't getting any.
I was also intrigued by the storyline of a secondary character, Salone, and what part she played in this book. Something was up with her, the question was what?
Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

JeaniePhoenix, AZAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Christian Medical Fiction!March 27, 2017JeaniePhoenix, AZAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5'Step by Step', Candace Calvert's second in the Crisis Team series, can be read as a standalone. It exceeds my expectations of this author's novels both as a novel of Christian growth and suspense. The setting is in San Diego, where ER nurse and young widow Taylor Cabot has moved to after the sudden death of her husband.
Taylor is weary of grieving and has made a list of 'tasks' to be accomplished by the third anniversary of her husband's death. She is also caring for her beloved, aging dog, Hooper. Just when she thinks she is ready to place checkmarks by the final items, Chaplain Seth Donovan is in town to train a new group of community crisis responders. Seeing Seth again after working with him at a hospital in Sacramento brings back memories of the early days after her husband's death. Recently going through her late husband's possessions had brought to her attention that he had an appointment to see Seth earlier on the day he died, and she hoped Seth could help her know what had happened that last day.
Seth heard that Taylor was leaving the California Crisis Care team that she had joined in San Diego and hoped to find out why. He also began to see Taylor as more than a crisis responder and nurse. Taylor wanted to move on with a new romance which she found with a plastic surgeon who worked out of her hospital. Seth is about shepherding those with faith and/ or emotional challenges. Taylor has become more pragmatic, not wishing to be vulnerable again, and the doctor she dates is the ultimate pragmatic.
The author's characters are appealing and described extremely well. We get to know Seth and Taylor best, then Aimee and Sloane. The health care team and crisis responders are sturdy and will stand the test of circumstances. I understand Taylor's desires for change and her need for control over her life, even down to the number of steps she takes each day versus how much she can eat based on those steps. She still believes in and loves the Lord, but wasn't walking that faith out in her life. I have increasing empathy with Sloane, who isn't quite who she seems to be.
The novel grabbed my attention at the beginning and held it throughout, each page adding to the intensity of the story. It is much more than a romance or a woman recovering from the loss of her husband. The author shows the gospel through actions and conversations rather than through the characters preaching. She shows several spiritual lessons in the same way, including showing grace to one person who many would turn from while not allowing another to cross boundaries put in place. God's love shines through as the impetus for the novel and the character interactions. There are heartbreaking moments when having tissues nearby will be helpful, and moments of happiness and hope for the upcoming days. I highly recommend 'Step by Step' to fans of Christian and medical fiction, growth, and grace.

jacquiRIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Step by StepMarch 26, 2017jacquiRIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Step by Step by Candace Calvert is book two in the Crisis Team series. The authors medical knowledge enhances the stories that she writes. This one is such a tribute to Crisis Team volunteers who fill crucial needs in emergencies.
What an amazing, wonderful story about two people who have suffered loss and grief and struggle to find peace and a happy ending. Crisis Chaplain, Seth Donovan, has learned to trust Gods plan, yet still has struggles with his past. Taylor Cabot, ER nurse, is proficient at her job but has been struggling to get past her grief and loss. Seth discovers his path long before Taylor finds her way to peace and love, but each plays a part in the others happy ending.
Two sub stories also emotionally involve the reader in the story. Kasie and Sloanes separate life struggles also engage the reader. Add in a sweet, aging dog and an abandoned black shelter kitten that need love and support, and the reader is hooked even more.
Love, healing, forgiveness, and second chances weave a compelling and poignant, unforgettable story. I highly recommend this well-crafted book that I received through TBCN in exchange for an honest review. Do not miss this amazing book. I am looking forward to reading the next title in the series.
Helen MAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Awesome Story of Moving OnJanuary 20, 2017Helen MAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Step by Step is book 2 in the Crisis Team series written by Candace Calvert. This is Taylor Cabot and Seth Donovan's story. Taylor Cabot lost her husband three years ago and is trying to move on with her life. She has made a list of things to do to move forward and is slowly checking them off. She has moved to San Diego and has started dating.
Seth has come to San Diego to train members to work with the Crisis Team. They are often called in to help council families of victims of tragic events. Seth often works the San Diego hospital ER and has reunited with Taylor. Taylor use to work with the Crisis Team, but with the encouragement of her new boyfriend, she is backing away.
Taylor still struggles with the events surrounding her husband's death. Why was he on that road the night he was killed? Why did he have an appointment with Seth the day he died? She also is struggling with having to say goodbye to her dog, who is passing away.
I love this book! I really enjoy reading Candace Calvert stories. Being an ER nurse, this series gives us a look into events that happen within the ER setting. Her stories are written so well, it is sometimes hard to believe I am reading fiction. I like how her stories included mystery and suspense with just a little touch of romance to keep the readers interest. I also like that the story has substance to it with touching lightly on the Christian aspect in the character's lives and how just living a Christian life, they are able to help lead others to learn about God. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to ready contemporary Christian Fiction.
I received a copy of this book from Book Club Network and I have freely written an honest review.
