Product Description

This first volume on the Gospel of John written for the International Critical Commentary was first printed in 1928 and so could be considered outdated. However the textual and linguistic analytical skills which Bernard brought to this commentary are useful for anyone doing serious scholarly study of the gospel. The text begins with a review of the history of the gospel, with ancient witness regarding its origin. A review of the structure of the text and its theological content is also present. The gospel is then commented upon in detail.

Bernard has produced one of the best commentaries on this gospel, and surpasses those by Barrett, Beasley-Murray, Godet, Morris and even Westcott. His long and detailed introduction has not been bettered, and he covers everything one wants to know about John and his gospel. I disagree with many of his statements especially those on 1:18; 5:4-5; 6:69 and 7:53-8:11. He accepts the Alexandrian reading as being the true reading without questioning it. I disagree for there is enough proof that these texts are in the autograph. On the whole the commentary is excellent, and the exegesis are simple and clear. These two volumes will be a great help to the scholar and teacher; but the layperson might find the flow a bit difficult, as the Greek has not been transliterated. I strongly recommend this commentary to all even if you own all the other scholarly commentaries.

Much useful information regarding authorship and reception of this gospel by 2nd century apostolic fathers. A scholarly work with sound interpretation.
