This is the definitive biography of the "prince of preachers" Charles Haddon Spurgeon. In it, the author shares never-before-told stories and little known facts about the legendary Baptist preacher who dominated his own day-and whose influence still permeates the Christian landscape today. Dr. Lewis A. Drummond, former President of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, has exhaustively researched the life and ministry of this legendary figure, bringing the man behind the myths to striking life. Included are fascinating chapers on Spurgeon's early life, as well as careful commentary on and chronology of his later pulpit ministry and public life.

Very inspiring book for anyone in the ministry, especially pastors. As great as a man Spurgeon was, he had a great deal of adversity like anyone else.Would make a great gift for your pastor.

Lewis Drummond's life story of Spurgeon brought me immense joy, as this gifted writer crafted one of the finest (and exhaustively researched) biographies I have ever read. This book, and Spurgeon's Morning & Evening Devotions book, has encouraged me to order (in the fall) Spurgeon's 5 volume sermon set and his The Treasury of David (updated in modern English version). Other great CBD biographies: John G. Paton (autobiography); Jonathan Edwards (by Marsden); The Divine Dramatist (by Stout); and John Newton (by Cecil). All terrific books!

I heartily concur with the previous reviewer; Spurgeon: Prince of Preachers was not only the best biography I've ever worked through (by far), it was one of the best books of any genre that I've ever read. Drummond's writing style is clear and easily understood. He goes into unbelievable detail (too much detail, at times) in tracing out all sorts of facets of Spurgeon's life and work (you go away thinking Spurgeon possessed nearly every virtue attainable, except control of the tongue). One dominant theme of the book (very encouraging to those of us preachers) is that preaching is one of the primary means that the Lord uses to grow his church. Note well the great length of the book - It took me probably around 50 hours to read it entirely. My only problem with the book is that Drummond occasionally allows his own theological opinions to show through, opinions that are not as conservative (might I say biblical?) as Spurgeon's.

I had to do extensive research on Spurgeon as part of a Doctoral program in Evangelism and Church Growth. Of all the books that I consulted on Spurgeon, this one is by far the best. It is the best biography I have ever read, and it is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a large book, but don't let it scare you away. It is fairly easy to read and a sheer delight. Challenging. Uplifting. Inspiring.
