Product Description

Spiritual Friend is about that special friendship of support and guidance that one Christian can give to another over time, a relationship in recent centuries called spiritual direction. The roots of this kind of friendship stretch back into Scripture and Tradition. The book also extends into the present religious and social framework for an understanding of its current need and possibilities. But is doesn't stop with this theoretical and historical analysis. Much of the book is given over to practical considerations of what to look for in searching for a spiritual director, how to be one, and how to better prepare those who are gifted and called to this distinctive ministry.

    Dr. Robert W. Kellemen
My copy of Tilden Edwards' "Spiritual Friends: Reclaiming the Gift of Spiritual Direction" is well-worn and frequently-highlighted. Edwards develops a unique philosophy of spiritual direction by integrating insights from modern culture, secular psychology, Church history, biblical theology, and mentoring practice. One of his greatest contributions is his explanation of the relationship between modern psychology and the Church. "One reason for the neglect of spiritual direction has been the meteoric rise of psychological schools of understanding and treatment of human development in this century. Largely cut off form their older roots in theological/philosophical/ethical concerns, they have become predominantly technical specialties for resolving emotional blocks to more free and full ego functioning" (p. 29). In other words, the Church abdicated its mantle as soul physicians, handling it over to technocratic, soulless scientists. In this light, one can better understand the poignancy of the subtitle: "Reclaiming the Gift of Spiritual Direction." Spiritual direction is Christ's gift to His Bride, to His Body, to His Church. Building upon a poetic quote from Chesterton ("Tradition is the democracy of the dead, extending a vote to our ancestors, refusing to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who are walking about"), Edwards probes various threads from Church history to develop his mosaic of modern spiritual direction. He succeeds in presenting a "model" that is not a straight-jacket, but a guide with helpful, relational handles. Throughout, his insights are spiritual, biblical, and practical. Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," "Soul Physicians: A Theology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: A History of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
