This booklet contains a revised and considerably expanded version of the material on spiritual direction and meditation which appeared, in installments, in the magazine Sponsa Regis. The first part is addressed to the Christian, particularly the religious, who seeks a spiritual director or who has one, and wishes to take full advantage of his opportunities. At the same time, it is hoped that some priests who are too shy to regard themselves as potential "spiritual directors" may, by reading these pages, learn to overcome their natural hesitations and, relying on the help of God, be emboldened to give advice and encouragement in the confessional when there is time to do so.

Merton, whose own tortuous path to spiritual maturity is well known, here offers the knowledge gained during that experience. He discusses the meaning and purpose of spiritual direction, and how to profit from that direction.
Thomas Merton (19151968), Catholic convert, Cistercian monk and hermit, poet, contemplative, social critic, and pioneer of interreligious dialogue, was a seminal figure of twentieth-century American Christianity. The one hundredth anniversary of his birth was celebrated in 2015.
