Publisher's Description

J. I. Packer's Keep in Step with the Spirit focuses on the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Now in its second edition, this book is not merely a theological study, but a rousing call to encourage believers to implement the Spirit's directives in their lives. Packer explains how to get the Spirit in focus and how to map the Spirit's path in life. He restates the Christ-centeredness of the Spirit's ministry, reaffirms the biblical call to holiness, and even-handily assesses the charismatic movement. Readers wanting to understand this movement, believers interested in the ministry of the Spirit, and fans of J. I. Packer's writings will appreciate this radical call to personal and corporate revival.

Author Bio

J. I. Packer is Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and an executive editor for Christianity Today. Best known for his best-selling classic Knowing God, he is the author or editor of over thirty books.

Scholarly, yet simple enough for everyone to understand, Keep in Step with the Spirit offers a thorough and even-handed teaching on the Holy Spirit. J.I. Packer is known for his insightful understanding of Scripture and his ability to convey that information to readers. These pages reveal a closer look at the Spirit’s work in this world, and in the lives of individual believers.
Yet, this book wasn’t written merely to inform or to entertain. Embedded within these pages is a clarion call to live in the truth of this teaching. This text is for those “who mean business with God and are prepared to be dealt with by Him.”
Currently, there are many books about the Holy Spirit on the market, but this one is unique because of the way the subject is presented. J.I. Packer is secure enough in his understanding of the Bible to write with clarity, compassion, and conviction. He tackles the often-controversial topics of healing, speaking in tongues, and holiness with a profound spiritual sensitivity. He writes candidly about the positive and negative aspects of the charismatic movement. He offers a careful examination of the popular belief in the Holy Spirit as merely a source of power, while pointing out the Spirit’s ultimate purpose and performance as taught in the Bible.
The teaching in this book was originally published as an extended essay in 1984. The book is now in its second edition, which proves its continuing relevance. The enduring truths have not changed, and in fact, may be more appreciated by today’s readers, thanks to the increased attention now being paid to the Holy Spirit.
Without a doubt, these pages will describe a quality of life enjoyed by first-century Christians, and one that is still available to modern believers. -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book

Keeping in Step with The Spirit offers a no nonsense, realistic and most importantly scriptural analysis of Pentacostalism and the Charismatic movement. I highly recomend this book to anyone in those movements. This is my first book by Packer and not the last.

Deep reading, so you have to take it slowly and think on what you are reading to let it sink in. Packer explains Scripture beautifully and clearly. Excellent read!

It was hard to give this a 4.5 because I highly admire packer but found this to be the opposite of what I was expecting. This is a fair critique of the charismatic movement, which is beneficial for any christian. You always grow in your understanding of The Spirit by finding out what He is not. Plus you will interact with these people and its good to know where the Lord is at work and not at work in the movement. Throughout the book he is providing a practical understanding of how the Spirit works in His saints, but no practical/devotional type chapters per say. If you are looking to grow in your knowledge of The Spirits work in our life and how we are to interact with Him, I would look to more simpler works first because of this books technical nature. But I would highly recommend reading it. It was extremely edifying for me, and also a lesson in grace by watching packer disect charismania with condeming them. His statement is "God will work in the lives of those who have an incorrect understanding of His ways even tho He desires a correct knowledge of Himself" So theres hope for the charismatics still! And the rest of us... praise God.

I did not read whole book but portions of book talk about every-member ministry. I found it very helpful and gratifying. Particularly, Korean pastors need to read this book. I come across not well read Korean pastors who accusing Plymouth Brethren cult based on Church Polity. Ignorance is not a virtue.
