Vikki MundyTornado AlleyAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Waste of timeApril 2, 2011Vikki MundyTornado AlleyAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2This series consists of several very small workbooks with neat old-fashioned covers. I originally taught my children to write Zaner-Bloser style (similar to Palmer) and their handwriting is beautiful -- I skipped the Italics series because 1) School kids in my neighborhood can't read regular cursive because of it, and 2) their handwriting looks awful, even though Italics is supposed to help this problem.
Anyway, I bought the Spencerian series because I liked the way it looks. But wow, these book have you making pages and pages of tiny little lines and scribbles inside tiny little gridded squares, and this goes on forever before you learn to write the letters themselves! The kids and I decided it was a real drag, so we stuck with the Zaner-Bloser style and threw out the Spencerian workbooks.
Some time later, I dug out the main guide and just started copying the Spencerian letters that were shown. Wow, my letters looked identical to theirs! Who needs all those silly little squares; just get a piece of notebook paper (college ruled) and just imitate the Spencerian alphabet. This is how we learned Zaner-Bloser-- just tracing and copying.
If you want to learn or teach Spencerian, just copy the letters. I will say that Spencerian is not as easy to read for some people since it does look quite different, but it is elegant and beautiful, and more like calligraphy.
