Younger students begin with the Grade K workbooks, All Aboard and On Track, which feature larger print and fewer exercises. All Aboard includes coloring, cut-and-paste, tracing, and circling exercises to help children develop phonemic awareness, letter recognition, manuscript writing, visual & auditory discrimination, and other readiness skills. On Track features matching, tracing, drawing, fill-in-the-blank, and other exercises to help children develop systematic phonics, vocabulary, reading, and comprehension abilities. Six "Phonetic Storybook" kindergarten readers are filled with fun illustrations that will hold students' attention as they read the simple sentences that reinforce the lessons.
Grade 1 students will use the Off We Go workbook, which includes follow-the-dots, coloring pages, and tracing exercises that teach letter recognition, sequencing, auditory discrimination, cutting & pasting, and phonemic awareness. The second Grade 1 book, Raceway, has fill-in-the-blank, matching, and writing exercises to help children develop their understanding of systematic phonics, vocabulary, spelling, manuscript writing, comprehension, and grammar. The seventeen Level 1 Readers provide the practice and confidence-building students need to become fluent, independent readers.
The Assessment Book includes 17 book-end assessments for the Phonetic Storybook Readers and 3 achievement tests that assess your students' word comprehension, word recognition, and story & sentence comprehension.
Teacher instructions are provided for kindergarten in the K Instructor's Directions for the K/Level 1 Combo Kit Pamphlet, which provides a 4-page overview of the program's Level K components. The Instructor's Manual for Level 1 is much more detailed, and includes goals, suggested pacing, materials needed (with page numbers), procedures with semi-scripted instructions, phonics songs and games, and a written spelling test. An answer key is also provided.

Upon arrival, I immediately opened it. I found every piece to be in it, no duplicates, no VHS tape, no cassette tapes. In the place of the VHS and cassette tapes I received a DVD and CD. I also received the treasure box but not the goodies (which I knew would not come with it). However, I am very pleased with this for I can get things from our local dollar store that I know she will really like. My daughter had no interest in school but she is now very excited about this program.
Thankful Mom5 Stars Out Of 5It Works and they Love It!March 17, 2015Thankful MomQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I was so nervous choosing a program for my child's first official educational experience at home. We had worked through a couple of store bought $10 workbooks, but this was the first structured program. I had tried another highly recommended program with my older child, and it was extremely difficult, boring, and he just gave up. I researched so many options and changed my mind again and again this time around. When I opened the package at home, I thought to myself...that's it? That's all I get? If you have any hesitations about buying this program, you can let them go. It's worth the money, it's so easy and frustration free for both parents and children, what you get is all you need, and even though the songs sound outdated to me, my children love them. I've heard a thousand times to let your child set the pace, but I was never confident in what that meant. This program comes with suggested pacing for the course, but it's so easy to tell when your child is ready for the next step that we didn't need their pacing. My only minor complaint about this product was the glossy paper of the workbook pages. There might be some reason for it that I'm not aware of, but it was just annoying to work with. There is only so much you can say in a product review. I would love to tell you about every detail of this product. But in the end I'll leave you with the note that this program is completely worth the investment that your child will benefit from for the rest of their life.
Noelani86865 Stars Out Of 56 Stars!September 11, 2014Noelani8686As a new, slightly unsure homeschooling mom, I am very happy I chose this program. After much research and a couple personal recommendations I bought this combo kit and we all really like it. I have a 3 and 5 year old and I was looking for a fun curriculum that would give my 5 year old a solid foundation in phonics and basic reading skills. Turns out this kinder/first grade combo works for both my boys. My 3 year old wanted to do school with us, so I had him using the All Aboard Book while my 5 year old used the On Track book. Both are great for phonics and a little print practice. After completing the All Aboard workbook we are going into the Raceway book. My 5 year old can do everything the program asks him to with ease. I feel like using music with kids to learn anything is good and very useful. My 3 year old is reading CVC words with ease and loves the songs and games. I am very glad I bought this combo kit. And just a side note in case anyone is confused on the media included, mine did have cd's, no VHS tapes. The instructional dvd needs to be updated in my opinion, I only watched about 20 minutes of it and stopped. That would be my only suggestion for the kit itself. Otherwise, it is great!
Q: Can I order a Separate Component? I have the Sing Spell Read & Write Kindergarten/Level 1 combo kit, but I don't have the 4 page Kindergarten Instructor Pamphlet. Is it possible to order this separately, or download it?Thank you.
Unfortunately the instructor pamphlet is not sold separately and we do not have a download for it the only thing available separately are the workbooks.
Q: Can we use the songs alone? My DD is starting to read and loves music. I like the phonics and reading program we are using but am looking for something more for her to listen to in the car. Will the songs make sense if we do not use anything but the songs?
The songs can be used alone, but they are more effective if they are used in conjunction with either a "letter/sounds" chart or flash cards. You could make your own.
Q: Does the K/1 Combo Kit (1999) truly come with a CD and DVD instead of cassettes and VHS? Some reviewers have complained that they received cassettes and a VHS tape even though the product description specifically says, "â¢Phonics Songs for Level 1 Audio CD (17 tracks)â¢1 Instructional DVD: Edition 2, Level 1 for Home Study & Tutoring; 1 hr, 9 min.
All of the kits we have now will have the CD and DVD.
Q: I am going to do this program with my 4 year old. Do I need to supplement handwriting or will this be enough? I was thinking about using Handwriting without Tears. Thanks for the input
This does incorporate some handwriting and contains a reusable writing slate. As you progress through the program you could assess whether your student needs additional handwriting practice.
Q: What do I buy I'm very interested in the Sing, Spell, Read and Write Curriculum. In the fall, I am looking to start my 4 year old on a kindergarten curriculum and my 5 year old on a 1st grade curriculum. Exactly what levels do I need to buy to cover both children? Thank you!
This set would be good to use with both children. You could purchase an extra set of workbooks and start them both at the same level, or you could start them at different levels and only purchase additional level 1 workbooks as your kindergarten student progresses.
Q: Which Kit do I buy??? Which do I need to buy first or are they the same kit??? The Sing, Spell, Read & Write, Kindergarten/Level 1 Combo Kit or the Sing, Spell, Read & Write, Level 1 (Edition 2). They both came out in 1999 and both appear to offer the exact same items. The second is about $60 cheaper but I want the one that is complete. Is edition 2 the second kit you are to buy?? They are both Level 1 just the other is edition 2. I could really use some help on which I am to buy. Thank you so much!!
This kit includes all of the components from the Level 1 kit, plus the Kindergarten instructor's sheet, "All Aboard" and "On Track" student books, and a set of 6 Kindergarten storybook readers.
