Tell us a little about yourself. I am chairman of the Master of Arts in Christian Counseling and Discipleship Department at Capital Bible Seminary in Lanham, MD. I also work as a consultant for the 50,000-member American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) where I direct the Biblical Counseling snd Spiritual Formation Network.
I write a quarterly column (Soul Physicians) in the AACC's Christian Counseling Connection Newsletter. I also write a quarterly column (Truth for Life) in the AACC's Christian Counseling Today magazine.
In my three pastoral ministries, I have trained hundreds of lay people in the art of spiritual friendship. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, I bring a practitioner's sensitivity to my writing and seminar ministry.
I earned my B.A. in Pastoral Ministry from Baptist Bible College, my Th.M. in Theology and Biblical Counseling from Grace Theological Seminary, and my Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Kent State University.
What was your motivation behind this project? Far too much Christian counseling misses the mark regarding a theological foundation that relates God's Truth to human relationships.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Soul Physicians provides a relevant, in-depth theology of biblical counseling. Just as medical students examine the anatomy of the human body, so soul physicians need to understand the anatomy of the human soul. Soul Physicians offers a theological foundation for the ministry of biblical counseling, soul care, and spiritual direction, equipping the counselor (pastoral, lay, and professional) to make Christian counseling truly Christian.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Consider the companion volume Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction. Spiritual Friends equips lay people, pastors, and counselors to sustain, heal, reconcile, and guide others using a work-book style manual to train readers in twenty-two core counseling skills. Also consider Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction. This unique book highlights the amazing contributions that African American Christians have made to the ministry of one another spiritual care.
