it's a good book filled with great old time gospel hymns, but a large print version would be better

It is great. This is the second one I have owned. I use it a lot at my church.

This review was written for Songs of Zion.
When it was released in 1981, "Songs of Zion" filled a glaring void in music publishing for a truly African American hymnal. The editors and collators, William B. McClain, J. Jefferson Cleveland, and Verolga Nix, compiled over 200 songs either written by or closely identified with the historic Black Church. In addition to the wonderful variety of songs, each section/genre of music is preceded by a historical account that briefly yet powerfully shares the story of the creation of that genre. These sections offer a historical account of hymns in the Black worship experience, a historical account of the Negro Spirituals, and a historical account of Black Gospel music. Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of the forthcoming "Beyond the Suffering: The Story of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." He has also authored "Soul Physicians" and "Spiritual Friends."
