Editorial Reviews

“My copy of When Someone You Love Has Cancer arrived this morning and I immediately sat down and read it from cover to cover. I believe this small book will be a blessing to many who have loved ones suffering from cancer. My wife’s sister has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and I know Cecil’s words will be helpful both to my wife and others in the family.

“I especially appreciated the short prayers at the end of each chapter and the helpful and very practical hints in the appendix.

“Thank you, Cec, for writing and thank you, Harvest House Publishers, for making this book available to people who need comfort and encouragement.”
John R. Burbank

“Thank you for the privilege of reading When Someone You Love Has Cancer. As a breast cancer survivor, I found that Cecil Murphey wrote truthfully about the feelings that cancer patients experience. His advice to caregivers to be a listener is priceless. One of my most important needs was for someone to just listen to me and allow me to share all of my feelings without fear of rejection, judgment or criticism. In addition, the power of physical presence was so necessary in order for me to know that I was not alone. That physical presence translated into God’s presence for me.

“The prayers are beautiful.

“The chapter, When She Can Still Smell the Flowers, is delightful. It is a wonderful reminder to all of us to share our love and appreciation to others while they can savor the moments and the memories.

“The appendix offers extremely helpful and very practical tips for caregivers. This book is easy to read and a great resource. I recommend it to all caregivers who have a loved one facing any kind of life altering disease or challenge.”
Karen Schlender

“Cec Murphey's well-written book addresses cancer in a personal, practical way. The appendix offers guidance for caregivers and explains what to avoid doing and saying as well as what is appreciated.

“Michal Sparks' watercolor illustrations are beautiful. The book is more than an quick-read. It even feels good to the touch, because the paper quality makes page-handling enjoyable. I highly recommend this book to everyone.”
Lucy McGuire

“Being a breast cancer survivor, I find When Someone You Love Has Cancer very much true to the case stories in the book. I was impressed that regardless of any diagnosis that there were some helpful suggestions listed in the book”
Vicki G. Castleberry, 39 years breast cancer survivor

When Someone You Love Has Cancer has timeless words of comfort and support. Inspiration that can be turned to again and again when the going gets rough. For me it has reminded me of times and people I don’t want to forget. While at the same time giving me the means to help those in my life currently going through this time of trial.

“This book is a wonderful addition to Cec’s Caregiver series.”
Virginia Garberding, RN, director of education, The Wealshire

“Cec Murphey is not a man prone to self-pity, but one who always looks for God's sustaining presence in life's most challenging moments. In When Someone You Love Has Cancer, Cec's pastoral sensitivity is paired with the often unseen emotions that come from his own experience of having loved ones who've battled cancer. The personal vignettes, the comforting prayers, and the lovely illustrations by Michal Sparks combine to offer the gift of serenity for those in the midst of pain and uncertainty.”
Rev. Suzy Cothran, pastor at Wythe Presbyterian Church in Hampton, VA

“The beautiful book, When Someone You Love Has Cancer, by Cecil Murphey, is a “must” read book for anyone who has a loved one with cancer. As a cancer survivor, I wish my family and friends had a copy when I was in the midst of dealing with cancer. The book is helpful and beautiful.

A Must-Have for Caregivers, Clergy, Counselors, Chaplains, Hospice, and Medical Oncology LibrariesAs a former pastor and volunteer hospital chaplain, Cecil Murphey had been around many cancer patients. As an author, he helped one woman write her cancer-survival story. However, when his wife got breast cancer, it was different. It became personal. He struggled to find a book that would help him as a caregiver. He found statistics, technical and medical information, and autobiographies of cancer survivors. Now that he is on the other side of his wifes diagnosis and she is a ten-year cancer survivor, Cec Murphey has written the book, When Someone You Love Has Cancer: Comfort and Encouragement for Caregivers and Loved Ones. The chapters are short with beautiful illustrations by Michal Sparks that provide an atmosphere of peace and comfort. Each chapter ends in a brief prayer. Cec writes from his heart in a down-to-earth practical way. The appendix is entitled Practical Things You Can Do to Help Those Diagnosed with Cancer. The tips are divided into three sections: Before You Offer Help, What You Can Do Now, and Long-Term Caregiving. Cec does a wonderful job of encouraging family and friends of cancer patients. As a nine-year cancer survivor, I wish this book had been around when I went through cancer. It would have helped my parents, the rest of my family, and my friends. Not only should caregivers have this book, but also ministers, hospital and prison chaplains, hospice personnel, counselors, and medical oncology libraries.

When Someone You Love Has Cancer by Cecil Murphey couldn't have come at a better time for me. Three days before I received the email about this book, I got word that my uncle's cancer had come back. As someone who is living this right now, this book is perfect. It's short and an incredibly easy read, perfect for anyone who's facing the horrible news but doesn't want to spend hours paging through a book filled with statistics and dry advice. Murphey's book has short anecdotes with down to earth wisdom for the family and friends of cancer sufferers. Some of the advice may seem like common sense, but when your life is turned upside down, common sense is remarkably rare. Each chapter ends with a short prayer for understanding and strength. The most important advice given is for caregivers to just listen and be present for those facing cancer, something that I needed to hear. This book offers hope in the midst of a frightening time. Now that I've finished reading it, I will be passing it on to my mom, and I'm sure that she will pass it on as well. It's that kind of book.
