Nathan Beckett spends his time fighting fires and trying to start his life over again admist the massive amount of rumors that almost ruined his life.
Brenna Strickland has tried to move on with her life after her father's murder, only to be left by her political ladder climbing husband who is trying to take away her children.
To be honest I am not quite sure how I feel about this book, which makes it, in my opinion a great read. It's a book that shows how God can bring great good out of great messiness. As human beings we all make bad choices, disasterous decisions that effect our lives, those turning points in our lives.
Nate, was his decision to leave his hometown an act of starting over or an act of running away? Brenna, the preachers daughter, struggles with a decision from her teenage years that may or may not have contributed to the she is making in her life at the moment.
Nate and Brenna make a great couple. As teenagers the two dated, but just as a relationship begins to form, life takes them in two different directions.
Terri Backstock is not an author to shy away from the flaws and messiness that can become our lives. While there is nothing graffic, this book has both dark depths and beautiful light. If you are looking for something with a little bit more fluff, this isn't the book you want, but if you want a great story that shows God's grace and mercy and comfort and second chances.
If you are a fan of Terri you will more likely enjoy this book, if you are new to this author I would encourage you to give this book a try. I dont' think that you will be disappointed.
Jennybug523 Stars Out Of 5Smoke ScreenJanuary 24, 2020Jennybug52Quality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 33.5 stars- I've read a lot of Terri Blackstock's books over the years. She is amazing at penning not only first class mysteries but also endearing romances. Her latest book is part mystery, part romance.
I loved the storyline. Fourteen years ago, Nate and Brenna fell in love, the minister's daughter and the town drunk's son. Things do not go well and the minister confronts Nate's dad at the local bar. The next morning the minister is dead and Nate's dad is accused and convicted of the crime.
Forbidden teenage love, a murdered minister, a mysterious church fire flash forward to today Nate returns to town after being burned fighting a fire, Brenna has turned to alcohol to cope with a messy custody battle with her ex husband, and Nate's dad has been pardoned by the governor and released from prison. Will Nate and Brenna get a second chance at love? Is Nate's dad really innocent? What really happened the night of the church fire? Will Brenna lose her kids and succumb to alcohol?
I hate to admit that I had a hard time getting into this story. I ended up skimming the pages towards the middle to get to the end. I had trouble getting into some of the dialogue as well. And I'm still trying to figure out what Brenna ever saw in her ex husband. He was a real pill. (I think that was probably the point.)
I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.
