Cheri SBattle Creek, MIAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great bookOctober 16, 2019Cheri SBattle Creek, MIAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have always wanted to read more Terri Blackstock books and I'm glad I chose Smoke Screen as my first. I love family dynamics in books and this one didn't disappoint. I also love suspense/mystery and twists and turns in books and this one delivered that as well. Blackstock writes well, drawing me into the storyline, the characters, and wondering how it will all end up. This was a great book I will be recommending to others.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.

Terri Blackstock returns with a captivating new novel told in two different POVs. Nate Beckett's father spent fourteen years in prison for killing Brenna Strickland's preacher father. Now, Nate's father has been released and Nate has returned to town to recover from a burn injury he's gotten on his job as a smokejumper. Brenna has also returned to town, divorced and fighting for her children from a vengeful ex husband who left her for a younger woman. Brenna is coping with alcohol from this devastating turn of events. In the meantime, a wildfire is threatening their town. This is a many-faceted novel that will draw the reader in over and over and interest is held captive until the very end. It moved me greatly. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Terri Blackstock has not lost her ability to keep a reader enthralled with the depth of emotions and suspense she is known for. Recommended.

JenMEAge: 25-34Gender: Female3 Stars Out Of 5Solid story but not my favoriteOctober 4, 2019JenMEAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3Terri Blackstock's last three books, the If I Run series, are some of my favorites in the suspense genre, so maybe my expectations were too high for this one, but I didn't love it. The premise sounded really interesting, but it ended up being more family drama than suspense. That's fine and has its place, but not the action-packed suspense I was hoping for. When the suspense aspect did come into play, the crimes were solved almost by coincidence more than any investigation. Nate was a great hero, but Brenna wasn't that likeable to me for the first half of the book. It's still a solid, engaging story with a satisfying ending, and some people might love it, but it didn't quite live up to my hopes. I will definitely keep reading Terri Blackstock's books, though!

Debbie LGeorgiaAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Smoke Screen is True To It's NameSeptember 21, 2019Debbie LGeorgiaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Smoke Screen. Just the title and knowing Terri Blackstock is the author, is enough for me to be excited. Her books are always full of mystery, suspense, romance, and page-turning surprises. You just never know where the story will go when you start a Terri Blackstock book.
This book is full of complicated lives. There's Brenna Strickland Herzog, her two children, and her ex-husband and his new trophy wife. Then there's Nate Beckett, injured smoker jumper finally back home to recuperate, his brother, mom and dad. Oh, wait. Did I forget to mention a difficult family (or three), a mean father-in-law, an ex-con, an arsonist, and a murderer? This book has all this and more.
Yes, this book has many characters with an array of difficult circumstances to overcome. The question is, will they be able to turn to God for strength or remain stuck in their own problems, facing trials, anger, disappointments, alcoholism, medical trauma, and murder.
Brenna and Nate seem to be destined for failure. No one is on their side. They've been through so much in the past that separated them and now their lives are suddenly thrown back together. You'll have to wait and read this suspenseful and surprising novel to find out. Sometimes, you think you know what's going onand then you realize you know nothing! It's a smoke screen meant to confuse and mislead us. This is another great novel by one of my "must-read" authors.

JH5 Stars Out Of 5One of Terri's BestAugust 20, 2019JHQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is AMAZING!!! Terri is one of the best.
I loved the story of Nate and Brenna. Brenna dealt with problems we all face, anxiety, depression and feeling out of control. We all have a way of coping with problems weather people turn to alcohol or not. She didn't like that she drank but she needed help!
All Nate wanted was to have his dad proud of him. He knew he was in Christ but he still wanted his dad's approval. And let's just discuss for a moment how brave he was to be a smoke jumper. That is BRAVE all over just that!
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves good books and Terri Blackstock! It will keep you turning the pages!
