Publisher's Description

STREET SMARTS FROM PROVERBS reveals Solomon's steps to divine wisdom while providing tools to navigate out of conflict into community.
Mitch Kruse learned the hard way that going to church three times a week while growing up did not answer the question:

Have you ever thought about changing the scorecard of your life from money to wisdom?

His pursuit to find the answer sparked a lifelong journey through the ultimate wisdom book, Proverbs, one that connects God's heart with street smarts.

STREET SMARTS FROM PROVERBS introduces Solomon's twelve words to the wise:

  • righteousness, equity, and justice
  • wise behavior, understanding, and wise communication
  • prudence, discretion, and wise counsel
  • discipline, knowledge, and learning

Each is paired with a real-life story of someone who experienced God's miraculous restoration after humbling their heart to Him. It explains, illustrates, and applies one of the twelve words, providing an easy-to-understand, yet life-transforming step-by-step process to assimilate each respective trait of wisdom.

STREET SMARTS FROM PROVERBS gives memorable prompts for the reader to recall every point with the purpose of applying it to conflict at work, with family, among friends, and in ministry. It provides tangible tools to be shrewd, yet harmless, in business dealings; to separate wisdom from foolishness through discretion; and to seek wise counsel for life's decisions.

Street Smarts from Proverbs is reading outside of the box. The author talks about Proverbs how Solomon was given One wish from GOD and he wished for Wisdom - so comes Proverbs - King Solomons book on how to make wise choices - the author says there are 12 words that it centers around - they are:

nah - you have to read it to know what they are but man oh man - wow - then each word has four principles. The author believes we have conflict raging inside of us. Proverbs tells us what to do with it to move in a "positive direction" . When conflict comes using Proverbs - I have a problem with that though - I do not have conflict raging inside me all the time - and I do not think every single person in the world has conflict raging inside of them every single moment of every single day like the author Mr. Kruse says. that is why I have JESUS in my life - ever heard of GRACE? I cannot imagine if I didn't - yes then I could see having conflict every second - I would be pulling my hair out - lol - other than that it is an awesome book - I received a complimentary copy of this book to read from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

Proverbs is one of my favorite books of the Bible. I like all of the practical wisdom this book has to offer for living life today. Street Smarts From Proverbs by Mitch Kruse with DJ Williams specifically focuses on the wisdom that Proverbs offers in the realm of conflicts. Kruse covers conflicts of all kinds--marriage and family, those at work, those with authority figures and more.

Kruse suggests readers read a chapter of Proverbs from the Bible every day. He actually suggests 3 more ways to add to that plan if you want to step up your game and read through the whole Bible and learn more. I used to read a chapter of Proverbs every day and then I got out of the habit during our recent moves. This book reminded me of how much I had gleaned from that habit and has me reading Proverbs again. In Street Smarts from Proverbs, Kruse uses real-life stories, Bible stories and offers simple steps for remembering ways to use the wisdom of Proverbs in conflict management. Kruse introduces twelves words from Solomon to remember when growing in conflicts: righteousness, equity, justice, wise behavior, understanding, wise communication, prudence discretion, wise counsel, discipline, knowledge, and learning. I especially liked the chapters on understanding, discipline and learning, but they are all good depending on what you personally need to work on.

Kruse is a business man who is married with four daughters. He shares a lot of wisdom he has learned from his own life as well as others. I like that his examples encompass people from all walks of life. I think all readers could find something to relate to. I would recommend this book to every one. I also agree with Kruse that reading a chapter of Proverbs every day is a good practice to stay in.

I received Street Smarts From Proverbs from FaithWords/Hachette Book Group. I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for the book.

There is a wealth of wisdom in Proverbs. Perhaps you've read through it, like I have, but have had difficulty organizing the information into principles for life.

Kruse has done an excellent job of examining all the information in Proverbs and organizing the insights around twelve concepts: righteousness, equity, justice, wise behavior, understanding, wise communication, prudence, discretion, wise counsel, discipline, knowledge, and learning.

This is a very good book illustrating the major principles for life contained in Proverbs. Kruse combines teaching on each subject with great stories giving examples of the principles in action. My favorite suggestion was the Five Second Rule. Before each phone call, email, text message, or meeting, take five second and ask the Holy Spirit what He wants you to do. (145) I also like the Ten Second Rule, taking anger to God for a full ten seconds. "He will cool us down, keeping us silent, patient, and on the straight path." (153)

Kruse often puts his information into an easy to remember form. His components for wise communication, for example, include

    Ask questions

    Share stories

Key in on the other person's perspective

    Speak Scripture. (161)

I highly recommend this book to those who may have read Proverbs but don't know how to implement the wise concepts contained in it. The material in this book allows readers to understand the principles and get a good sense of how the principles are lived out. Men, I think, would particularly like this book as most of the stories are about men.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
