Jeanette SterlingAge: 45-54Gender: female2 Stars Out Of 5Waste of my daughter's timeFebruary 26, 2015Jeanette SterlingAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 2I spent alot of time looking at this curriculum. After talking with Singapore Advisor, I decided to purchase Singapore 4A-4B Textbooks and Workbooks with Home Instructors Book and 5A and 5B Workbook and Textbooks with Home Instructors. I advised the Advisor that my daughter is 14 and I was concerned about switching. Advisor stated that my daughter should take the placement test and that, even if she places low, she may be able to skip books or breeze through them once she gets used to Singapore. On this advice I decided to place her low so she could get used to the curriculum.
We have spent many days trying to work through lesson 7 Word Problems (Primary 5A U.S. Edition) and it is extremely confusing. Understanding that there are different methods and bar models to solve a problem. The idea is to use the method that works best for your child. Does not work. One problem it teaches you to convert to 10 units then you are working a problem out and when you look at the answer key its converting to 9 units to solve the problemAnother situation you are converting to like denominators and in another problem you are not . no logic.
My daughter is a good student, hard worker, self starter and I was hoping this math curriculum would help her to love math and improve her math skills When we got stuck on Word Problems which is Section 7, and spent many days trying to press and figure this out and much frustration from my daughter. I decided to reach out for help and received a call from Barbara. When I shared my dilemma, she advised me that she would never suggest that I start Singapore Math this late (age 14) because it is so different from U.S. math.
Its very sad my daughters time and energy was wasted on Singapore because of poor advise from Singapore Advisor.
And the best answer I got was to switch to Teaching Textbooks (same distributor as Singapore) and Singapore would not be able to refund because we purchased it through Christianbook Distributors.
Thank God for Christianbook that works with you.
Sadly, I am not going to be able to give Singapore a good review. I will be posting this email as my review.

One word of wisdom, if you are planning to begin using it and have been using something else, you may want to back up a little since they are considered to be somewhat ahead of some of the other curriculum. Also, Singapore covers the concepts quite quickly so from time to time we have slowed down and incorporated some extended learning in areas where she was struggling. Singapore also has workbooks with additional work. Also, the emphasis is on the metric system so we have done some additional work with our system of measurements. Another word of wisdom, make sure to order the textbooks and not just the workbooks since the teaching methods are a little different than what we are used to. Singapore teaches students to do some of the problems in their head. My daughter and I have looked at other math curriculum but she loves Singapore so we continue to use it and enjoy it. Although she doesn't particularly like math, she has gotten excellent scores in math in standard testing so I am very happy about that.

BonnieColoradoAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Good workbook but does not include an answer keyJuly 24, 2012BonnieColoradoAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2This is a good workbook however, it does not include an answer key in the back. An answer key would help parents with the word problems. Also, an answer key could have easily been maybe one or two extra sheets in the workbook. I contacted the company via two different emails to try to get an answer key and have not heard any response. (That was over a week ago.) So, yes, good workbook, but there should always be an answer key in this type of workbook.
KrisAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5I love Singapore MathJanuary 12, 2012KrisAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5After homeschooling my first one all the way through to High School, I feel Singapore Math strongly prepared them for High School Math and beyond. I love the workbook format at younger ages. I makes the math seem not so intimidating.
