Lily n Luthers momAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent for fast paced learners!November 25, 2013Lily n Luthers momAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My daughter loves this curriculum. Math is no longer a chore. It has just enough pictures and color to keep her engaged, but the focus is absolutely on introducing concepts and then building on them. I love that it includes word and story problems all along the way, so she can see how the material can actually be applied. It also shows different ways to apply that knowledge by changing the wording or using multiple methods to solve a problem, or solving multiple problems within one word problem/story. It keeps her on her toes a bit, so she has to think about how to solve the problem, rather than just flat memorization or using the same method over and over.
Our last math curriculum had so much repetition and it seemed to take forever to move on or build on learned material. I would say that slower students may need more help or may need to go over a chapter again before moving on, but an advanced learner will be able to move at a comfortable pace through the material.
The accompanying exercise workbook must be purchased with it. It's more than I wanted to spend (for the full year: two textbooks and two workbooks plus the "extra practice" book) but totally worth it. I also purchased the teachers manual, which is also excellent but not completely necessary for this curriculum. I will probably not bother buying it for future grades.
If you find that your child is bored by math or is not being challenged enough to keep them engaged, try this out.

WiconiLa Crosse, WisconisnAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5The very best!September 14, 2011WiconiLa Crosse, WisconisnAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I LOVE the scaffolding and that this book series teaches MATH, and LOTS of MATH. It's NOT full of extraneous garbage that just clutters up pages. I appreciate that ideas are introduced several times, each time fleshing them out a little more. For example, in the first grade year, iterative addition is introduced, and then multiplication, but it isn't really worked with much, it's just that the idea is presented. And again the second year, but this time, there's more in depth, and it's accompanied by skip counting and some drill.
Skills are clearly outlined with simple and straightforward examples and the corresponding workbook assignments are easy to identify.
If I had to criticize something, I'd say that sometimes there's too little practice, but there are other, additional practice books that round it out nicely.

It is full of hands on learning ideas and games that really bring the concept of each lesson into full understanding in a short amount of time. By the time I was done with the Instructor's lesson and the correlating text book lesson my child was ready to do the workbook exercise all by herself. We did not experience this with other math curriculums.
