Tell us a little about yourself. Im a Texas girl whos transplanted in Pensacola Florida. I grew up in Fort Worth, a.k.a. Cowtown, and served alongside my pastor/husband in Texas churches for more than three decades. We raised three awesome kids, who are now grown and married, and have gifted us with three practically perfect grandchildren. We poured our lives and hearts into serving and leading those churches, and truly enjoyed Gods blessings.
Then, for the next decade, we loved living and serving God in Indianapolis, IN, where Steve worked in denominational ministry, and I began writing books, magazine articles and a syndicated Fresh Ideas column. It was a true joy to serve hundreds of churches and to invest in the Midwest. Last year, when Steves ministry responsibility changed to cover the Southern states, we moved to Pensacola. (I know, its a tough assignment, but )
Nothing delights me more than seeing God change lives, and watching how He uses every-day people to accomplish His work. I thrive on the privilege of writing and encouraging church leaders. I also enjoy travel, reading a great book on the beach, and almost anything chocolate.
What was your motivation behind this project? My most driving motivation behind this project is to encourage ministry wives. As Ive had opportunities to spend time with hundreds of them, Ive observed the unique way that God uses those leaders. Ive seen how other women observe them, admire them and emulate them. And Ive sometimes seen hints of discouragement, insecurity and fatigue. Many ministry wives truly have no idea what a great, positive influence they have on others, and how much their smile, touch or word means to those they serve. My motivation is to remind ministry wives that God created them uniquely, and encourage them to rest in Him and find joy in todays journey.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Im praying that each ministry wife who reads this book will be newly blown away by Gods call on her life, and reignited to relish every opportunity of life as the wife of a minister. When she puts down the book, I hope shell thank God for His unique call on her life. And I pray that shell continue shining for Christ with a big smile on her face.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Ive got to admit it. I was totally overwhelmed! For several years, God had given me a great desire to write a book of ideas and encouragement for ministry wives. It seemed that He kept putting ministry wives in my path, and I was constantly thinking of what a fun task this would be. Once the book contract was signed, however, I suddenly felt incompetent, even fearful! Did my words sound too simplistic? Too harsh? Could they possibly apply to ministry wives of different ages, backgrounds, experience, personalities and mission assignments? As I gave this assignment back to God, that terror subsided, and the thrill of potentially inspiring those important leaders returned. Once again proving that our great God can do all things.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Those who have influenced this book are numerous. Dozens of ministers wives have been friends and role models, and they vary from small church to large church, chaplain to seminary leaders. They span several countries and denominations and life stages. Some are women Ive simply observed; others have served in the same church or ministry with me; and a few are dear, long-time friends in ministry. I am enormously inspired by seemingly every-day type women in regular ministry situations who accomplish Gods extraordinary work, with joy and contentment.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Id love for my readersespecially you who are new ministry wivesto be assured that its all worthwhile. Every busy day, every assignment, every effort and every success, every penny saved or spent or given, every hour investedabsolutely everything you give to others in Gods name is worth it. Your partnership and love for your husband as you serve together in ministry makes a difference for him and you, and for Gods work. Grow strong in ministry. Know that you have a rich reward with God, and keep your eyes on the eternal prize. And keep on shining!
