My 8-year old wanted to learn ASL, so I bought this book because the description specifically says "ASL". Then I got the book and was disappointed to find that it is not ASL, but signed English. I don't take issue with their approach - that using ASL signs in standard English word order is the easiest way to bridge between deaf and hearing people - and it might be easier for my child to learn the signs without also having to learn the grammar. It's just very disappointing that the description is inaccurate and I didn't get what I thought I was getting.

That said, this is a reasonably good introduction to some of the basic signs in a variety of categories. The pictures are basic black-and-white drawings (with a few photos sprinkled in) that are somewhat visually unappealing. As best I can see they are mostly accurate and a good online sign dictionary will fill in any gaps. The activities are sparse but will encourage further exploration. I really want to like this book a lot more than I do, but it's not bad as a reference and will be a decent addition to our homeschool library.
