Tell us a little about yourself. I've been a pastor for 27 years. I've written two Christian novels for B&H titled "A Choice to Cherish" and "Written on Her Heart." I wrote the screenplay for "Sidewalk Singer," believing God could take me to the finish line as the writer, lead actor, songwriter and producer. It was a tremendous attempt at "doing it all" and seeing if all the doors would open!
What was your motivation behind this project? I had written hundreds of songs, of which I believed several would work well in a Christian movie. I wanted to write a down-to-earth, character-driven screenplay that might eventually make it outside the church walls and have an impact for good in the world.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope people's hearts will be touched by this "real feel" story. The Dove Foundation reviewer told me that this story was the most realistic ever! That's what I love in books and movies: realism and a story that feels totally believable.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I was impacted beyond my wildest dreams. I was thrilled to involve friends and church members in this project, along with my city manager, city hall, local businesses, restaurants and numerous city locations in the beautiful town of Tecumseh, Michigan. Using 14 of my own songs and acting the lead role was challenging and thrilling, and I demanded the very best from myself which was rewarding and fun. Everyone who was involved really held up their end and combined to make a beautiful movie. I feel blessed and inspired in every possible way by this project.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Of course, I was influenced and motivated by the success of the Kendrick brothers in Georgia through the success of their groundbreaking Christian movies. Also, a composer/pianist/artist named Kent Marcum, who lives near me and has sold his music to Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz, CBS and others, came alongside me and brought great talent and inspiration. Outside of my own projects, I really enjoy Third Day and Casting Crowns.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I'm working hard on my 2nd film, called "Mr. What," with my extremely talented son, Shaun, who is directing and doing all the cinematography. I truly believe people will be "in awe" of Shaun's creativity when it comes to making a great film, and I can't wait to see it all unfold, Lord willing. I hope "Sidewalk Singer" blesses many, many people, who will look forward to checking out my next movie at the end of 2014 or early in 2015!
