Chuck Pagano, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, has become one of the most inspiring, intriguing personalities in the game of football. Only three games into his rookie season in 2012, Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia, sidelined by the side effects chemotherapy and months of recovery.
Undeterred, Pagano didnt let the confines of his hospital bed keep him from coaching: texts, calls, and emails kept him in constant contact with players, staff, and assistants. Motivated to be just as strong and determined as their ailing coach the team started winning game after game, compiling an impressive 11-5 record.
The players werent the only ones touched by Paganos hope and strength of character. Inspired by the tenacity and toughness of their beloved coach, a newcomer to town, thousands of fans united to form Chuckstrong, a movement that soon raised millions to help beat cancer. Pagano, fueled by his faith, his family, and his love of football, returned to lead the Colts to another winning season and the divisional playoffs in 2013.
With Paganos practical lessons on living, loving, and leading, Sidelined, which includes an 8-page color photo section, inspires us all to stay in the game and never accept defeat.

I am not typically a reader of memoirs, but as a resident Colts fan, I found myself unable to avoid this one. In a story of triumph, Coach Pagano eloquently details how a seemingly tragic and poorly-timed illness rallied a city and a nation. Immediately upon his diagnosis, the strength of his wife and team support system is evident. This book gives you a first hand account of how God tests our faith in the craziest ways sometimes. Three weeks into a new head coaching position and within a matter of two days to go from what you thought was healthy to being admitted to a cancer center is certainly enough to bring the strongest to their knees.
For the football fan, this is an excellent read. For the non-football fan, this is an excellent read. A story of hardship, valley experiences, and moving mountains that is certain to leave you with the hope that you too could lean on your faith and get through even the worst of circumstances.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my review. I was not required to post a positive review.

Even if you aren't a football fan or a Colts fan, it does people good to look at what has happened in others' lives because sometimes it brings a perspective we wouldn't gain otherwise. Such was the case with Coach Pagano and the year "Chuck Strong!" was the battle cry not of just the Colts team, but of many people even players from other teams. The NFL is more than a game or a championship; it is more like a family due to the amount of time the guys are together on the team. Plus relationships between families are built and retained regardless of their husband's job.
I received the book yesterday and sat outside, turning pages until the very end of the book. Readers get a glimpse into what the Strong family, Colt Team and organization went through during Pagano's rookie coaching season. As I read, my memory went back to when my sister-in-law and best friend went through their battles with cancer, along with another friend who also went through a battle with this bullying disease. While I had to say good-bye to each, never do I forget the lessons I learned or the way God blessed us during those times.
Sometimes when someone we don't know is suffering it is far enough away not to really affect us, but when our coach got sick, it impacted Indianapolis and its ripples are still going forth. I believe people who make time to read the story Chuck shares will come away with hope, faith and a fighting spirit. Many people will identify with the various way players and friends reacted at the unexpected news Coach got in 2012 and will walk away encouraged along with challenged to be encouraging others. The biggest lesson we can learn and utilize in our personal lives, careers, families, and nation is to look out for each other and serve each other. The call to serve is the most rewarding, challenging, sacrificial and fulfilling life we can ever imagine and more!
