This kit is comprised of the student workbook and the teacher's manual. Encouraging student-teacher interaction, the teacher's manual features comprehensive chapters that include everything needed for the lesson, including jingles, exercises, lessons, study notes, tests, checks, writing activities, and more. Lessons are scripted, with directions for students italicized, important concepts and words bolded, and charts included to help teachers and students visualize each idea. Student page numbers are referenced to help both parent and child easily find their respective places. "How to get started" and "jingle guidelines" provide additional hints and information for the teacher. Answers for the student practice and tests (included in the student workbook) are included chronologically. 406 three-hole-punched pages, softcover.
Divided into a jingle section, reference section, practice section, and test section, students will need to flip to the necessary section in order to complete their lesson practice. The jingle section contains the lyrics to all the jingles, while the practice section provides a variety of activities, including matching, editing, multiple-choice, short answer, writing exercises, charts and other forms of written skill practice. Each test in the test section is divided into four areas: grammar, vocabulary, language skills and a weekly summary. Tests involve a variety of questions which should be familiar from the practice section. The reference section contains vocabulary words, an initial set-up plan, general reference notes, samples, and charts. 125 pages, softcover.
An audio CD with the jingles and introductory sentences is also included to help students remember concepts such as parts of speech.
This level 4 kit covers all eight parts of sentence types; parts of speech including indirect objects; quotations; reference skills; usage including pronoun/antecedent agreement; capitalization including outlines; verbs; pronouns; conjunctions; punctuation; letter, expository, persuasive, descriptive, narrative, and creative writing; figures of speech and writing autobiographies.

mom5 Stars Out Of 5Love Shurley English!July 25, 2016momQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The student labels the types of words in the sentence (noun, adj, pro, etc.) instead of diagramming the sentence. We all hated diagramming and it made English a miserable class. The jingles are excellent in helping learn the structure of a sentence, although we didn't use the CD, we just made up our own rhythm. It has four vocabulary words per lesson, but does not include a spelling word list. You will need a separate spelling curriculum. The student practices writing one day a week, so it doesn't get too overwhelming. I wish this went through 12th grade!

I'm surprised with how much it costs that they haven't updated it to include an effective index for both teacher, and mostly the student edition. Very hard to understand.. :(

So much repetition put to a jingle really helps. I do wish it came with a student workbook so I didn't have to write everthing out for him.
Peggy5 Stars Out Of 5July 24, 2010PeggyI am a veteran homeschooler, and I love the Shurley Grammar programs. I tried several different programs and was still looking until I found Shurley two years ago. Now I'll never use anything else. It explains things for me so that I can explain them to my student. Last year my third grader helped her twelfth grade sister with figuring out what job a word had by using the way Shurley teaches them to classify sentences. I only wish I had found Shurley years ago. I am starting my twentieth year of homeschool this year.
