This kit is comprised of the student workbook, teacher's manual and jingle/introductory sentence CD. Encouraging student-teacher interaction, the teacher's manual features comprehensive chapters that include everything needed for the lesson, including jingles, exercises, lessons, study notes, tests, checks, writing activities, and more. Lessons are scripted, with directions for students italicized, important concepts and words bolded, and charts included to help teachers and students visualize each idea. Student page numbers are referenced to help both parent and child easily find their respective places. "How to get started" and "jingle guidelines" provide additional hints and information for the teacher. Answers for the student practice and tests (student pages included in the student workbook) are included chronologically. Three-hole-punched pages, softcover.
Divided into a jingle section, reference section, practice section, and test section, students will need to flip to the necessary section in order to complete their lesson practice. The jingle section contains the lyrics to all the jingles, while the practice section provides a variety of activities, including matching, editing, multiple-choice, short answer, writing exercises, charts and other forms of written skill practice. Each test in the test section is divided into four areas: grammar, vocabulary, language skills and a weekly summary. Tests involve a variety of questions which should be familiar from the practice section. The reference section contains vocabulary words, an inital set-up plan, general reference notes, samples, and charts. Softcover.
An audio CD with the jingles and introductory sentences is also included to help students remember concepts such as parts of speech.
This level 3 kit covers all eight parts of speech and all sentence types; predicates, direct objects, prepositions, and other parts of speech; quotations; parts of a book, outlining and dictionary skills; subject-verb agreement; double negatives; homonyms; capitalization in numerous contexts; verbs; punctuation; and expository, persuasive, descriptive, narrative and creative writing.

The jingles are fun for the students and as their teacher I really like the way the lessons build upon one another. It allows them to completely digest one concept before adding another. The pace is great. This is our second year using this curriculum and though there are other all inclusive curriculums, I still elect to purchase my subjects separately so that I can make sure that my students are getting the absolute best I can I find. The first few chapters are essentially reviews of materials learned last year and then the chapters begin to add on to that material. I found this to be extremely helpful as I was somewhat nervous about what information may or may not have been retained by my student. He's done great and the jingles came back naturally (for both of us!). =)

I think the program is comprehensive, and I like what is being taught, I just don't like how it is being taught. My daughter thinks the jingles are silly and she's refused to do them so we've no use for them. Also, the teaching scripts are mostly for oral instruction - so this course is more geared towards the auditory learner, and my daughter is more visual and hands-on. I've had to type up EVERY single lesson so my daughter can read them herself; she's an avid reader and understands the lessons better by seeing them rather than just hearing them. And, she better understands the practice sections by the time she gets to them when she can read her own lessons.
Because I have to type up every lesson and all the teaching scripts, I find this curriculum just too time consuming for me as a parent, and for my child. My daughter dreads English now, so I'm switching to another Language Arts program that is less overwhelming for the both of us!
This program does have a lot of great information in it, however, I wish they geared it a little more for independent study, and for all types of learners (auditory, visual, and hands-on), and gave the information in smaller bits so it's more easily digested. I excelled in English in school and want my daughter to love and appreciate it as well. Unfortunately, Shurley English is having the opposite affect.

I am looking forward to starting on Monday.
Stephanie Smith4 Stars Out Of 5February 5, 2010Stephanie SmithI believe Shurley English is a great program. I am able to help my 9 year old write better by discussing the parts of speech in his writing that he is learning in this course. I enjoyed the "bonus" of the states and capitals in level 2 but didn't feel it was necessary to repeat in level 3. I gave a four star rather than five because there are other unnecessary exercises as well but the foundation of the curriculum is great.
