Presuppositions have become the challenge of our age. We are unaware of them, yet they impact our every decision. They arise from our culture. They arise from the nurture we receive in our young lives. They are insidious. Until we question our own unique presuppositions, we find it difficult break free of patterns of thought, behavior and choice which are less than Christ-like. Schaeffer's book helps to understand the historical development of our culture's most prevalent world views in religion, politics, art and science and identify the culture's impact on our attitudes and choices; attitudes which we are surprised to find we have and choices about which we are embarrassed to find we have made. Knowing how these insidious presuppositions have crept into our lives unbidden frees us to live differently, to choose differently, to choose Christ in our attitudes, thoughts and choices.

Due to the years since publication, some of the comments are a bit dated. However, the overall overview of Western culture and the effects of Christianity are still valid, though somewhat frightening.

Absolutely profound. Dr. Schaeffer's synthesis of the history of western thought and culture is clear, concise and offers answers to the questions every Christian needs to be asking about the world and the culture we live in. Understanding the steps that lead to where we are today allows us to understand our current situations and what to expect as well as how to go about changing the world we live in. Schaeffer's predictions back in the 1960's about where the world was headed are frighteningly prophetic of our current spiritual and political predicament in America and Western Europe.
