"Tamika Catchings has lived an extraordinary life. This remarkable book tells the story of her emotional journey to becoming a WNBA champion, WNBA MVP, and three-time Olympic gold medalist and offers a testament to her character and will. She is a role model for young women who dream of becoming professional athletes and for anyone who faces what seems like an insurmountable challenge." -Adam Silver, Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA)
Tamika Catchings has shown what it means to have the heart of a champion on the court her entire career. In this book, she details her struggles, her triumphs, and her desire to be the best she can be. As a reader, I appreciate her willingness to share her vulnerabilities, and as a friend, I beam with pride at how she channels those vulnerabilities into strengths while impacting those around her. Everyone who reads this book will be impacted by her work ethic, loyalty, and example. The young people who read this will be shown that they can in fact 'catch the stars' if they are willing to commit, persevere, and trust throughout their journey" -Stephanie White, head coach of the Indiana Fever
A compelling look into the game of basketball and beyond, Catch a Star is a testimony not only to how Catchings overcame adversity and rose to success but also to the power that we all hold within ourselves. A story of courage, determination, and growth that will challenge the dreams of the reader and dare them to reach higher." -Dwayne Allen, NFL tight end
Alannie MarshallRaleigh, NCAge: 18-24Gender: Female2 Stars Out Of 5Not a Basketball Fan? Not the Book for You.April 13, 2016Alannie MarshallRaleigh, NCAge: 18-24Gender: FemaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I recently had the chance to read Catch a Star by Tamika Catchings with Ken Petersen. This book is definitely an interesting one, and Tamika's story is inspiring. However, this is not a book for someone who has little to no interest in basketball, as the majority of this book is focused around the sport. I personally enjoyed reading about Tamika's childhood and upbringing, but I felt a little lost when basketball started to become the focus. It was such a central theme to the point that I felt overwhelmed at my lack of knowledge and interest in the sport, and was compelled to set the book aside. That being said, if you are an avid basketball fan or a fan of Tamika Catchings, then definitely pick up this book. Tamika has a way with words and is very relatable. If, however, you--like me-- have very little interest or knowledge of the sport, then this book may not be for you. I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.
debsMaineAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Catch a Star ~ Tamika CatchingsApril 3, 2016debsMaineAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Tamika tells her story of heartache, struggles and her faith in GOD in this book. She tells her story from childhood, high school, college, her career and her foundation. She has hearing issues from her childhood and shares how this was GOD's blessing for her life. Not being able to hear made her compensate with body language and lip reading, this was helpful for her love of playing basketball. She lives for basketball, her love for GOD and her energy to help others with her foundation.
I was not aware of Tamika and just started to read this story one afternoon. I am not a basketball fan and know little of the sport so I was very surprised at how interesting and entertaining her book was. I couldn't put it down, It just kept flowing along with keeping my attention. I would recommend others to read this book, it is a great inspiration to show any age how determination and your faith will determine your outcome in life. I was very pleasantly surprised at this story..... great book to give to those that need a little encouragement.

RachelGender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Great for All!April 2, 2016RachelGender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have always enjoyed biographical type books. I am also a big fan of sports. So this book was perfect for me. I remember watch Tamika play when I was a kid. Tennessee Women's basketball has always been a thing of beauty and getting to read about one of those awesome players was a lot of fun. What I liked about Tamika's story was the fact that she never blamed anyone else for her problems big or small. She made it her mission to work twice as hard as everyone else. Now even though this was to keep others from making fun of her disability, she learned that it helped her to be the best ball player she could be. It gave her an edge that many others didn't have. I also enjoy reading about people who put God first and live their faith. I think this book would be great for pre-teens and teens who are struggling to fit in or are picked on or bullied, because she shows you, you don't have to listen to them. You can be anything you want to be and it doesn't matter what others think. I have enjoyed reading this book very much and I can't wait to let my daughters read it.
Thank you to Revell for the opportunity to review this book. A positive review was not required.
MercyAge: 18-245 Stars Out Of 5A story of triumphApril 1, 2016MercyAge: 18-24Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Tamikas story of triumph is an inspiration to everyone. From early on in her life, many things were stacked against her; however, not one given to quitting, Tamika pushed on and strove to be the best she could be. Catch A Star chronicles her success in her sport, basketball, and how she came to a deeper faith in God. I enjoyed reading her story and learning about the development of womens basketball. I also like how she interspersed brief reflections about God and life in her writing. Even in the midst of her fame, she puts her focus on what really matters. I would recommend reading this book, especially if you enjoy basketball. I received this book from Revell in exchange for my review.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Inspiring story of a champion basketball playerMarch 30, 2016bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This is an inspiring story of how Catchings rose above challenges to become one of the top WNBA players of all time.
She shares how she suffered from hearing loss as a young person. She wore hearing aids and was tormented and teased by classmates until she finally tossed them in a vacant lot. Her parents divorced and that was a challenge she had to overcome too.
I was impressed with her desire to play basketball even at a young age. She loved the game so much as a teen her goal was to play in the NBA as there was no women's league then. Her father had played professional basketball and he taught his daughters how to play the game. Catchings says her hearing loss forced her to pay attention to subtle body movements, a plus for playing basketball.
She takes us through her high school experience and a state championship. Then her time at Tennessee with coach Pat Summitt and an NCAA national championship. She had an ACL injury her senior year and wondered about the WNBA draft. But she was picked third by Indiana Fever, a team in their second year. Catchings won WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2002. She was on three Olympic teams and brought home three gold medals. She was essential to Indiana Fever's first ever WNBA championship in 2012. She was MVP of the league, of the championship series, and Defensive Player of the Year.
But her skill on the court is only half the story. More important is who Catchings is. She came to a point where she realized basketball was the most important thing in her life. She let God into her life, becoming born again, and made God in control of her life. She knows she has been gifted by God and gives back to her community, especially through her Catch the Stars Foundation she established in 2004, helping young people reach their dreams.
This is an encouraging book. Catchings is a great role model for young athletes. She has an inspiring character and exercises strength and persistence. I recommend it to basketball fans and young people ready to be inspired to be the best they can be.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
