ShillerMath is a Montessori-based math program that covers PreK-Pre-Algebra concepts through three kits (all sold-separately): Kit I (PreK-Grade 3), Fractions (most ages), and Kit II (4th Grade-Pre Algebra). Each math concept is covered through bite-sized lessons that teach through the four learning styles (visual, tactile, auditory, kinesthetic), giving students a deeper understanding of the material. No Montessori or math knowledge is required-nor any lesson preparation! Teachers simply read what's in quotes.
Time spend on the program will vary by age, from 15 minutes per day for 4 year olds to 30-45 minutes per day for students ages 9 & up. Instead of marching from lesson to lesson, teachers observe whether students understand and are ready to move on to the next lesson, understand but want to do more problems on it, or don't understand and the lesson needs to be revisited at a later date. Each lesson in the book is clearly laid out with the lesson objective, list of manipulatives needed, learning styles used, and any consumables required, followed by the scripted lesson. The Answer keys feature the student workbook pages with the correct answers overlaid in red ink.
This Kit II includes almost everything needed; parents will need to supply crayons, markers, scissors, string, playing cards, post it notes, measuring cups, measuring spoons, kitchen scale, paper money, drawing compass & protractor, calculator, compass, and tape measure.

Seri5 Stars Out Of 5Helps identify and fill gaps in knowledge of math conceptsApril 2, 2016SeriQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I wanted to get a leg up on upper elementary math concepts before my early elementary home-schooler started asking me questions I may not be able to answer. Since we love ShillerMath Kit I, we knew investing in Kit II was a no-brainer. As with the first kit, this one also comes with a free 5 year downloadable consumable package, so all worksheets, graphs, etc. can be easily replaced. I myself am not bad at math, but due to being a migratory family when I was a youth, I have a number of gaps in my knowledge.
So I decided to put myself through the kit, knowing we'll also use it for our elementary student next year. No matter what your level, the texts speak to you respectfully. I found that older children will not require as much hand holding as younger students and that the workbooks are engaging, but focused. This is an open and go kit. FedEx drops off a carton on your porch, you pull it in, open it and lay out all the manipulatives you will need for the whole multi-year program, requiring only a few household items you are sure to have. Then you can fill out the diagnostic test and receive a customized list of lessons based on your knowledge gaps. This avoids repeating math concepts you already understand and helps keeps things focused, useful and fun.
Topics in Kit II range from basic math to geometry to pre-algebra. Time telling, money, temperature scales, playing cards, map scales, and compass directions are covered along with math-related words and stories about mathematicians add interest for the more verbally oriented students. Book 6 ends with pre-algebra concepts such as exponents and solving for the unknown. I am sure a lot of adults would benefit from a remedial education such as this, and at your own pace, for only a few moments a day. I am not at all nervous about helping my child with math anymore and am confident we will meet any questions with ease.
