Just a few weeks ago one of my favorite authors/bloggers, Ann Voscamp, featured an excerpt from author Chrystal Evans Hurst new book Shes Still There. After reading it, I knew this was a book I had to have. Shes Still There is for any woman who cant seem to find the girl she use to be. The girl with big dreams, ideas, and plans for her life. And as Chrystal would say, Shes Still There.

First let me say, Chrystal is hilarious. I found myself laughing so many times while reading this book. Especially at her reference to the #fatdemon. My favorite chapter in this book is one titled Precious Cargo: Carry Your Contents Carefully. Chrystal tells the story of falling asleep at the wheel at a red light in her town. (This story is unbelievably funny to me because it sounds like something I would do.) Many passers-by call the police concerned about a woman who has either passed out, or is dead sitting at a red light in her car. When the police comeand wake her up, the officer reminds Chrystal that she is carrying precious cargo. You see, her husband and kids are asleep in the car as well. Chrystal then gently reminds us that we are carrying precious cargo as well. We are here to do a job. God loves us and we have value.

I think the real beauty in this book lies in the honesty and vulnerability of Hursts own story. She was willing to share and be real. Because of that, it is easy to relate to her. Further, she is a wife, mother, and grandmother who has lived some life. I always appreciate learning from someone who has actual life experience! I highly recommend this book to any woman, in any walk of life, who needs a bit of encouragement. I requested a copy to review from BookLookBloggers. I was not required to give a positive review.

She's Still There is the most honest book I have yet to read. It forced me to face some issues in my life that I had been avoiding. It makes you do the work of rescuing you. This book will make an excellent gift. I love it!!!!

OMG! There are so many adjectives and verbs I could use to describe Chrystals new book. From the Foreword by Priscilla Shirer I was in utter tears. Every chapter I could see an area in my life that connected with Chrystals. At every turn of the page I kept thinking, Chrystal is my SISTER! This book was (is) so relatable to my life. From Chrystal getting pregnant young, being a single parent, our love for a Hershey bars, to the recent health issues of my husband. What I loved most was not just being able to see areas of my life, but seeing how Chrystal took those hard places and applied Biblical passages that allows me to see God in not just her journey, but my journey. If I didnt know better, I would think this book was made SOLELY FOR ME! The book is great because it is a combo (to me) of a devotional with real-life tangible application that points you to Jesus. At the end of each chapter there is a Reflection for the Rescue. In this section, there are Three Rs: Remember (Like a recap of the chapter), Reflect (questions to reflect on your Rescue Journey), and Response (Being vulnerable, sharing with a trusted friend, identifying the next step of the Rescue). I cant lie, Reflections for the Rescue caused me to take a long hard and sometimes painful look at the girl I placed on hold; how and what I needed to do to RESCUE her. Shes Still There helps you reconnect, re-identify with the girl in you. But most importantly, it connects you to the girlthe woman you are meant to be in CHRIST. This is a great book and a great read for women of all ages who are looking at their lives and asking God, Where am I? How did I get her? And how do I find my way back to the personthe girlthe woman You created me to be?

Rescuing the Girl in You by Chrystal Evans Hurst

What is my purpose? I have struggled with this idea for years wondering what are my God given talents and what does He want me to do for His kingdom? And then I had the opportunity to join a book launch team for Chrystal Evans Hurst. BAM. Shes Still There-Rescuing the Girl in You is an honest and transparent approach to digging deep, finding your purpose, and loving the journey. Chrystal uses her own experiences, both painful and rewarding, to help the reader realize this life is always moving forward and what we can do to stay focused and on track.

The book is divided into six parts and easy to read chapters which assist the reader in spending the necessary time on her. A woman can explore the ideas of what makes her unique and identify her special gifts, abilities, interests, and her nature. At the end of each chapter is a reflections page which allows the reader to remember, reflect, and respond to the heart of the chapter. In addition, there is a list of scriptures which support the idea of the particular section. Being a detail oriented person, I noticed the scriptures were listed in no particular order, which I would have preferred for easy thumbing through the bible. Well, I heard the back story as to why the scriptures were listed in no particular order (Chrystal had her own scriptures she wanted to use and asked others for their suggestions) hence; they were listed in no particular order. As a bonus, skipping around my bible and looking up the scriptures has assisted me in sharpening my scripture search skills without using my table of contents!

This book opened up my mind and heart to invest quality time in me and to understand and explore my God given talents. Chrystals approach to tackling one of the great mysteries, purpose, is both refreshing and real. So many times we feel alone in our pain and Shes Still There is a comfortable reminder this is not the case. Learning to live in and through the pains of life is what makes us stronger and more passionate as women. I feel more empowered knowing my girl is still worth the work and the rescue. A must read for anyone willing to do the hard work and reap the rewards.

In this book, Hurst reminds us that the girl who dreamed big is still inside of us. She encourages us to fight for our dreams, for the life we always wanted. To really examine the life we live, and embrace the place we are in. Then, we must develop, encourage, and choose to live the life we've been given.

Through incredibly personal stories, it's more like you are sitting down for coffee with Hurst rather than reading her words on a page. Because I listen to her podcast, Chrystal's Chronicles, I could mostly hear her reading the words to me. Her cadence and story telling wove together a story that constantly pointed me back to God as I consider the dreams that he planted in me so many years ago.

Reading this book during my "break" from the world was definitely no accident. The reminder that we are always a work in progress so certainly needed in my time of feeling lost. This book feels a little bit like getting to walk alongside a life coach who is helping you once again find a purpose for your life.

Hurst doesn't tell you how to live your life or think about your life. But she does share the lessons God has shown her along the way and provides questions for you to consider to figure out your own direction. This book isn't a prescription. But it will provide the stepping stones you need to walk along to find the answers for yourself.

I received a copy of this from Zondervan. This review is my own, honest opinion.
