All her life, Sylvie, has taken care of other people. For years, she was the sole care taker of her father. While in that role, she adopted, Rose, who she raised as her own daughter. Now, at 17, Rose is pulling away, and chafing against normal teenage rules.

Rose viciously lashes out at Sylvie, claiming the rules are used to keep her from enjoying life, and that Sylvie isn't her "real mom" anyway. Because of Rose's rebellion, Sylvie relaxes some of the rules, and suddenly, Rose disappears.

Has she left of her own free will? Or has she been kidnapped? Clues appear that can support either scenario. What is the truth?

Set against the background of the fabulous 1893 Chicago World's Fair, this story is exciting, and is a mystery right up to the very end. The real descriptions of the fair transport you to that thrilling time, while the puzzle of what happened to Rose will keep you turning the pages.

Faith and God plays an integral part of the talk, and Sylvie, a self-sufficient woman, finds a long-time friendship might be something more. I highly recommend this 5-star book.

Bethany House Publishers provided Tickmenot a copy of the book to review, opinions are my own.

Sylvie Townsend's worst fears are realized when her adopted daughter goes missing during the Chicago World's Fair.

Compelling and engaging from the very start, I loved this follow up to Veiled in Smoke. Though the setting and the characters are familiar, this book takes place just over twenty years later, and could be read as a standalone without difficulty. I loved the premise from the beginning, at forty-three, Sylvie has never married, but poured her life into her daughter and bookstore. When her daughter starts asking difficult questions about her origins, she fights the urge to protect her, but finds herself living her worst nightmare when Rose goes missing.

This story is so well done with a riveting and heart-wrenching plot, that tackles difficult topics of loving and letting go, that had me glued to the page and imagining the worst. Kristof is a well disciplined, kind, intelligent and even keeled man, and I was so glad that Sylvie had him to help her in her search. I loved seeing them work together and realize hopes that they had thought passed them by, absolutely one of my favorite things about this story!

Overall, this book does an amazing job of bringing the Chicago World's Fair to life, with a compelling and suspenseful storyline that kept me fully engaged, as well as seamlessly integrating a strong message of faith and trusting God. Highly recommend!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Rarely (if ever) does a book do all these things for me: keep me in suspense; teach me about a fascinating time-period in American history; and cause me to reflect on my own personal growth. I loved that this book had all three elements of three great books wrapped into one.

Shadows Of The White City is a brand new novel from Jocelyn Green. It's the second book in her fiction series entitled "The Windy City Saga"

It tells a riveting story involving a woman who loses the one thing she always wanted most - a family.

Sylvie took in Rose, but when Rose goes missing she turns to boarder Kristof Bartok for help.

This is a intriguing story that kept me on my toes. As someone who loves Chicago it was interesting reading a book based there but from an earlier time.

Jocelyn Green is quickly becoming a favorite author and this book only furthered that. She intricately weaved this story to keep readers on the edge of their seat AND falling in love with the characters.

I received a copy of this book for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sylvie's story is here at last! I have been looking forward to reading this story, and it did not disappoint. I had a hard time with the first novel, mostly because of how Sylvie was treated, so I was so eager for her to have her own story, and it was such a good one. "Shadows of the White City" is a complex and artfully woven novel. It's not one to rush through - the vivid details and wording of it all is sure to require your attention and paint the setting in your mind.Characters are always the best part of every story for me, so as you can imagine, that is where I spent the majority of my focus! This book takes place many years after the first novel, and Slyvie's life hasn't exactly turned out as she planned but she has cherished the pieces that she held on to, most dearly her adopted daughter, Rose. When Rose goes missing, Slyvie is confronted with more than just fear at losing her precious daughter - fear of losing everything that she has found her identity in.I loved seeing how Slyvie's character grew throughout the story. She was such a strong character even at the beginning, but she grew even stronger throughout it, while still showing gentleness of spirit, and learning that it is perfectly good to rely on others at times too. We don't need to be self-sufficient - and indeed, we are never really self-sufficient at all; God is our strength, and Slyvie learned this lesson for herself, learning how to let go and trust Him. It really was a beautiful message, and it played across the pages so naturally.Kristoff was the perfect gentleman! Truly a respectable and entirely loveable hero. He was never pushy or forceful, but always enduring, always loving - yet he had his own weaknesses certainly, and seeing his own journey progress alongside Slyvie's was very enjoyable to be apart of.I truly enjoyed this book, and I think I can say it might just be my most favorite of the author's works I've had the pleasure of reading so far. "Shadows of the White City" was beautifully written with fantastic characters, and a moving plot - a wonderful read for sure!!
