From the back cover: Ten essential spiritual disciplines for busy moms.
What is it about motherhood that causes you to abandon any semblance of a spiritual life? Why is it that when you need God's peace the most, you sometimes feel God's presence the least? When you're surrounded by the happy chaos of children, how do you spend time with God—especially if it means choosing prayer over sleep? How can you demonstrate a solid spiritual life to your children if you don't have one yourself?
Mom Seeks God offers a highly relatable story, practical advice, and wry humor to help anyone grow in their faith as they address life changes with grace, patience, and prayer. As readers discover ten essential faith practices, they'll learn that motherhood itself is a spiritual discipline and may even be God's most effective technique for forming us into the people we were created to be.
It is difficult to find the time for our special time with the Lord when a child or children are demanding so much of our time. And we are mostly happy to give it to them. So what do we do? This is what "Mom Seeks God" is all about. Moms often neglect their own spiritual encouragement and growth in the name of putting their family first. But a mom can't fully demonstrate a solid spiritual life to her children without personally taking the time to pursue one. Ms. Roller shares how she focused on one spiritual practice each month for a year and outlines ten essential spiritual disciplines for busy moms: prayer, fellowship, submission, study, simplicity, silence, fasting, worship, service, and celebration. Along with Ms. Roller by the time you finish the book you will discover that motherhood itself may be God's most effective technique for forming a more faith-filled life. Great book.

April EKSAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Honest, encouraging, practical!April 15, 2014April EKSAge: 35-44Gender: femaleJulia Roller has written many different books and articles on spiritual growth and Bible study. Yet, when her first child became a toddler she faced the realization that her spiritual life was suffering in the busyness of life as a mommy. The spiritual disciplines she'd enjoyed before motherhood didn't seem to fit into her life anymore. So she embarked on a year-long journey to focus on one spiritual discipline per month, discovering how to prioritize them in her life once again.
And that's how Mom Seeks God was born. This book is the record of Julia's attempts to practice these ten spiritual disciplines once again: prayer, fellowship, submission, study, simplicity, silence, worship, fasting, service, and celebration. Before you sigh and give up, just know that it didn't come easily for Julia, and she shares her struggles and her practical solutions with you. The goal is not perfection, but growth.
In college, I studied Richard Foster's book Celebration of Discipline in one of my classes. I loved the book in college, but I have to admit that I haven't fit very many spiritual disciplines into my life lately, either. I was glad to see Julia Roller refer to that book throughout Mom Seeks God. Knowing we both enjoyed this book helped me feel a connection with Julia. Her honest admission of her faults, her selfishness, and her failures to focus on prayer and meditation encouraged me to keep reading and not lose heart. At the end of each month, she may have found practical ways to adapt a discipline into her life and schedule, but sometimes she also discovered that her initial understanding of the discipline's purpose or effect was wrong.
At the end of the year, Julia realized that although she could no longer fit hours of intense Bible study and focused prayer into her life, God was using motherhood itself to grow and change her. Motherhood is also a spiritual discipline, and the key to fitting the other disciplines into our life is to live with a daily focus on God and His will for us that day.
I needed to read this book. The very title of the book spoke to me. Mom Seeks God: Practicing Grace in the Chaos. I often feel as if our family life is chaotic - so many voices, so many tasks, so many people needing me. I find myself lacking grace in my responses to them. I don't always respond with Christ's love and later I regret the tone of voice or the words I spoke. I pray that I will have more grace and love in my life the next day, and that my family will continue to show me grace and forgive me for my failures. I often feel dry and thirsty spiritually, exhausted physically. Mom Seeks God encouraged me that God doesn't expect me to give hours of intense Bible study or prayer to Him right now, but I do need to take baby steps to be sure I'm modeling a healthy Christian life to my children. Not only do I need to set a better example, I need the strength and grace that would come from more time spent with God.
If you understand what it is to feel dry, thirsty, exhausted, and longing for grace in your life, I am sure that Mom Seeks God will bless and encourage you. It is possible to fit spiritual disciplines into your life as a busy Mom. Julia Roller will walk you through the process.
