I AM SECOND: REAL STORIES, CHANGING LIVES BY: DOUG BENDER / DAVE STERRETT

Speechless is all I can say. This book was amazing it is a reminder of how we should live our lives. As I read each testimony I was reminded of my own testimony. We are always searching for something, and we all hit bottom. In "I am Second" it reminds the reader that God is good. We are not alone. God created us to be in communion with Him. We were never meant to be alone, but because of sin we are separated from God. So when we begin our search God will answer and lead us to Him.

I read this book in 2 and 1/2 days I just could not put it down. I am Second shares testimonies of the famous and not so famous people they all had one thing in common they were hurting and they reached bottom, and they all called out to God. The wonderful miracle of it all was God answered. I loved the book and I would recommend that you pick it up and read it. The book reminded me it is not about us. It is about God. God Bless.

I just finished reading the book "I am Second" by Dave Bender and Dave Sterrett. I was first attracted to the "I am Second" logo. We had watched some of their movies in youth group so I was familiar with the movement. The book was packed with testimonies that were honest, easy to connect with, often sad, but also hopeful. Each story had a great ending which showed the transformation by God on individuals including Brian "Head" Welch, Ken Hutcherson, Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs, and Bethany Hamilton. The book was a bit heavy so I read chapters in spurts, but overall, I was very inspired by the dramatic life changes. I would probably loan the book out to someone older than 14 due to some drug, alcohol, and sex mentions. No mentions were supportive of these things, but they were parts of many individual's lives and are relevant to helping explain issues in their past. A few of the stories are appropriate and inspiring for all ages.

I absolutely loved the format of the book. At the end of each chapter you could scan a bar codes and watch videos through an iPhone or other scanning device. They also listed web links to online videos of the character in the chapter and also characters with similar stories. There were colored pictures throughout and a great usage of simple graphics. As an artist, good book designs always stand out to me and influence my buying choices. I was very impressed with the format of "I am Second".

Overall I give this book a 5 out of 5 rating.

I Am Second is more than just a book - it's a movement. It is "the honest, raw, and often painful journey of broken people who have decided that life is not about them". Authors Doug Bender and Dave Sterrett have taken the stories of both famous people and everyday folk and allowed us to peek into their lives, at the mistakes they have made, and the encounter they have had with Jesus. Rock star Brian "Head" Welch, athlete Josh Hamilton, one-armed surfer Bethany Hamilton, and Christian musician Michael W. Smith are just a few of the people you will meet through the pages of this book, people who are choosing to put God first and themselves second.

The stories contained in I Am Second are powerful, engaging, and very well-written. The book is easy to read, and can either be read all at once or over the course of many days, allowing you to meditate on the power of Jesus to change lives. I greatly appreciate the willingness of the contributors to open up their lives and allow us to see their mistakes, their decisions to use drugs, look at pornography, or dive into a myriad of addictions, choices similar to ones we all make, mistakes wiped away by Jesus' grace. Others share about the power of their relationship with Jesus to help them walk through incredibly difficult times. I thought that a neat feature of the book is the provision of the QR codes at the end of each story, which links to the film for the person who is the focus of that story, or for people who have similar stories. Most of all, I liked the chapter at the end of the book about becoming second by recognizing what Jesus' sacrifice offers for us all.

I highly recommend this book, for it's potential to change lives, and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

    I Am Second

By Dave Sterrett and Doug Bender, Forward by Colt McCoy

This book in one word was simply "AMAZING!". This book is actually part of a new ministry/movement that most people should be aware of as today called : I Am Second. A friend of mine introduced me to I Am Second. I was so amazed about their mission, their vision, their hearts for God. Not soon after, they started posting many videos about the movement. The videos featured different artists of today. Music, Movies, etc. I was amazed to see so many artists in the secular come out about their faith in Jesus, which was something you rarely see or hear now days. When I saw they came out with a book, I just KNEW I had to get it. And boy, am I glad that I did. They had artists and their stories that focused on before Christ & after Christ. They even shared their struggles and how God helps them get through! My favorite three people that I read first was Lecrae, Bethany Hamilton, and Michael W.Smith. They all have inspired me in some kind of way. When I finally read their stories for myself, it really inspired me in my own walk with Christ in this life.

Lecrae, because he is one of my favorite Christian rap artist who keeps it real for Christ, who spreads the gospel every where he goes, and yet is not afraid to show his down falls. But when I read his story, it really inspired me because he along with the others showed me that they are people, like you and me, who face with different trials and tribulations in life.

Bethany Hamiliton's story inspired me when I first saw "Soul Surfer." So, I was super excitied to read more of her story in I Am Second. Such a blessing. It realy inspired me to see how much God can really use our trials for His glory and how we shouldnt make less of things because of our selfishness. Everything isn't about us.

Michael W. Smith also inspired me, because here is a christian musician stating that in the beginning he had problems giving God all the glory when he performed. And that he is learning how God comes first, and we are second. We are just mere vessels for the Lord.

These are just three stories that inspired me! But the book have so many stories and how God worked in their lives, no matter where they are at. I encourage any reader to please pick up this book and let the glory of God change the way you see your own life today. And know that you are not by yourself. There are others out there who may have struggled or are struggling with the same things you are. Here you can see how much the Father loves you and encourage that He can make the same change in you today as well.

God bless ya & love ya lots :)

    -Jenny!

This is a powerful book. As a minister's wife my husband and I have seen people come out of very dark and painful lives and accept Christ as their Savior. Yet in a short time go back to the same lifestyle. For this reason, this book was very encouraging to see so many not only accept Christ but continue to make Him first in their lives. I think it would also be encouraging for those struggling and wondering if they can truly make a lasting change.

I liked the title of the book, it really spoke to me. We have to be second and Christ first for Him to work in our lives. Today many try to make Him second and wonder why they don't have more of a victory in their spiritual walk.

These are stories of all kinds of people, some famous, the ones that are thought to "have it all". I appreciated the transparency and honesty of each person. Putting it all out there regardless of shame or ridicule shows that they have made Christ first. All walks of life and every addiction and sin you can imagine is represented here.

As I read their failures and mistakes, and saw how greatly sin had destroyed their lives, I witnessed how the awesome power of God can work in the seemingly impossible situations. The book gives the strong message that there is always hope in Christ, no matter where you are or what you have done. I found stories very inspiring and gave me a renewed desire to make sure I am second and Christ is first.

I especially liked the fact that a website is posted where I can go and watch each person speak and give their testimony! A real bonus!
