    The Second Chance Brides Collection

Lovers of historical romance will certainly find something to enjoy in this set of nine stories that span from the Revolutionary War to World War 2. Men and women are given a second chance at love while growing their faith.

In the first story, Love in the Crossfire, Gretchen's fiance left for war and never returned. She lives with her father and they try to survive while keeping their small farm running. When Jake, from the enemy's army, arrives and hides in their barn, Gretchen must choose what is best for her. Is it the war her fiance fought and died for or is it new independence and freedom from Britain? And how will Jake fit into her choices?

The next story is Daughter of Orion. Matilda disguises herself as a cabin boy on a ship in order to make enough money to pay off her father's debts when he is killed in a whaling accident. The work is grueling and exhausting, but she is determined. She meets Tom, a handsome harpooner; she has to remember that he thinks she is a boy, all the while fighting her growing feelings for him. When a storm comes upon them, they must fight for their lives and each other.

In The Substitute Husband and the Unexpected Bride, Cecily travels with her young sister all the way to Washington Territory where she is to marry a young man she once knew. However, upon arrival, she finds that he has been killed in a work accident. Unable to find work and unsure what to do, she accepts a proposal from Garret, who worked with her betrothed. The marriage is to be in name only, until they are comfortable together. Can they intertwine their two lives and become a marriage of love?

The Prickly Pear Bride was my favorite of the stories. In it, Evelyn is a Shepherdess, helping her grandfather with his sheep. She is known all over town as the lady who left her groom at the altar. However, she didn't leave him there because she was prickly; she left him so he could find true happiness with the one he actually loved. When Cole rides into town to start a cattle ranch, he saves her and the sheep from an overflowing creek. Can he also save her from her reputation and herself?

The Widow of St. Charles Avenue is about Colette, a young woman who married a man out of obligation. When he passes and she finds herself out in society again, she discovers many men are just interested in her wealthy late husband's inheritance. When she starts helping Malcolm teach young boys at an orphanage, she finds her heart stolen by the boys and maybe even by Malcolm.

In Married By Mistake, Thomas and Bessie pose for photographs for a friend who wants to open his home up as a resort. In the photos, they are to be getting married. What they don't know though, is that it isn't just a photo shoot; it is a real wedding. What happens next? Do they stay married, get an annulment, or even worse, a divorce? This funny story will lighten your heart as you watch them find true happiness together.

In Fanned Embers, Juliana works hard as a baker to save enough money to get away from the railroad camp where she lived with her late husband. She is constantly besieged with requests for her hand from the rough miners. When Lukas offers to help keep the would-be suitors at bay by pretending to be in a relationship with her, she accepts his offer. However, as they get to know each other, can their relationship move past the pretend phase? And when a fire breaks out and takes over much of the mountain where they live and work, can they survive and find their happy ending?

From a Distance tells the story of Trevor and Anna, two people who once knew each other, although Trevor doesn't remember Anna. She chooses to keep their past affiliation a secret because she is afraid he may not want to see her anymore if he knows the truth. Trevor finds himself falling for her, but when he discovers the truth, he isn't sure he can trust her. Can the two of them find their way back to each other for the third time?

Finally, in What the Heart Sees, Miriam and Paul must find a way to be together. Five years prior, they met and fell in love in Germany when she was there with her mother. Now, World War 2 is happening and Paul is a POW in her home town. But, prejudice and anger at the Germans makes it seem almost impossible for them to follow their hearts and find what they once had. Her father, especially, is against the idea. When meeting in secret causes them both to get into trouble, will they ever find their way back to each other?

I really enjoyed these stories. They were fun and lighthearted and easy to read. If you enjoy history and romance, you will find a smile on the pages of this book.

I received a free copy of this story from NetGalley for my honest opinion.

Women who have lost at love and think they are doomed to be alone forever receive a second chance at love in this sweet novella collection. From 1777 to 1944, romance flares and flames ignite for nine lonely women. I really enjoy novella collections as they are quick reads. I like being able to finish each novella in a short period of time. They are great for busy readers. I also love historical fiction and this book will satisfy lovers of romance and historical fiction.

Second Chance Brides is a delightful collection of nine historical romance stories, and they will be keeping you reading long into the night.

Whether you have just a few minutes, or several hours to read, this book should fit the bill, you can quickly read one, or continue on to the next.

These stories span decades, and not only do they provide a great time to get lost in; they offer many historical facts, which I loved. From on to the next they varied as to the time period, and kept my interest right to the end.

I also found myself with a few chuckles, watch for the names of some of the characters.

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Barbour, and was not required to give a positive review.
