Infidelity, deceit, distrust, and shame. Unfortunately, these are recurring themes in many of today’s marriages in America—even in the family-values-promoting, Christian-based Robertson family.
With a romance that began in junior high, the couple got off to a rocky start but soon settled into married life and had two baby girls. Alan became a pastor in the church where his family had been members for years. Then, when Lisa had an affair, the heartache and the tension was very public.
But this is not a book about a marriage gone wrong. It is a candid story of rescued love and renewed commitment. After nearly getting divorced, Alan and Lisa came to terms with what went wrong in their marriage and both began the hard work of making it right. Now married for twenty-nine years, Alan and Lisa counsel couples in trouble and speak across the country—openly sharing their hardships, their journey to renewed commitment, and a thriving marriage.
“Al and Lisa Robertson’s story is one of wounded-ness, poor decisions, sin, relational pain, and betrayal?but ultimately reconciliation and redemption through Christ. For those who say ‘but you don’t understand what I’ve been through,’ I recommend this book as a clear example God can and does restore broken lives and hearts, no matter how fragile.”

Al and Lisa Robertson tells how their lives were like growing up and during their school days. They tell about the heartache they experienced during those years, which led them far from God and turning to drugs, alcohol, sex and other evil lifestyles. Al briefly describes what it was like being Phil Robertson's son in the early years and how he took care of his younger brothers while Miss Kay tried to make ends meet. Lisa tells of being molested at a young age and her relationship with her family. She also shockingly reveals that at age 16, she has an abortion.
Al and Lisa met while in middle school. Lisa was quickly smitten. They began dating in high school where Al introduces her to fast cars, alcohol, drugs, and sex. Al was not a very nice young man and treats Lisa horribly, leaving her heartbroken. He later turns himself around, leading back to Lisa. They marry and endured many obstacles for the next thirty years. Including the early birth of their daughter, Al going to preaching school, loneliness and infidelity.
Lisa is very honest when she discusses her emotional affair with one man and then a sexual affair with another. This led Al to make important choices regarding his marriage and what was best for his family. How he deals with it is truly inspiring. After many problems in their marriage, Al and Lisa proves that any marriage can endure anything.
Every chapter in the book has a section called "Seasoned Reflections", which includes scripture for inspiration and encouragement. At the end there is an Appendix: Two Keys to a Dynamic Marriage and Questions for Individual Reflection or Group Discussions.
Great book for married couples.
