Publisher's Description

Are you getting the spiritual nourishment you need?
We’ve all experienced times when we have not eaten a balanced diet or we’ve eaten too many sweets. We feel sick, light-headed, and occasionally depressed, or we become irritated and edgy. It’s the body’s way of letting us know that it’s lacking sufficient nourishment. Optimal health requires optimal nutrition. The same is true spiritually speaking. Without sufficient and regular biblical nutrition, our inner life begins to suffer the consequences. We become shallow and selfish, more demanding and less gentle, and quick to react impatiently, rashly, and angrily. These are telltale signs of inner malnutrition.

In Searching the Scriptures, respected Bible teacher Chuck Swindoll shows us how to dig deep into Scripture and uncover its profound truths for our lives. He outlines the principles of Bible study that will help you understand God’s Word, apply it, and communicate it clearly to those around you. Too many people try to go it alone, without a guide, for this life and the next. Chuck explains how we can fix our own spiritual meals, then invites us to feast on nourishing truths we can discover in God’s Word.

Fantastic book, but then again Charles Swindoll's books are always spot on.

This book will help you dig, to think, and to pray better so that your walk with the LORD will be greater, deeper, and life changing.

Chuck writes from a life of walking with God and he does it in a way where you think he's been living your life. Chuck is real and he teaches his readers from his own life of trials and errors, successes, and failures, and shows us that he's just as human as the rest of us.

This latest book is not a hurry up and read book. It's a book that has you stop along the way and read, pray and meditate on the Scripture text and really soak in what you've read.

Fantastic book to own and have to refer to often.

One of my greatest concerns as a Christian blogger is to accurately communicate the truth of God's word through my writing.

I want to correctly handle the word of truth.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

Sometimes, Im afraid Ill unintentionally misinterpret a verse by reading it out of context and understanding it wrong.

I was excited to read Chuck Swindolls Searching the Scriptures: Find The Nourishment Your Soul Needs, because I wanted to learn his methods of studying and teaching the Bible for over 50 years.

The book focused on helping the reader learn how to search the scriptures in order to gain sufficient spiritual nourishment.

Each section and chapter of the book centers around the metaphor of meal preparation. You are the chef and youre going to learn how to prepare a spiritual feast.

When it comes to cooking, its not enough to read about it or watch someone else do it; you have to actually get in the kitchen, roll up your sleeves, and give it your best effort! The same is true when it comes to studying the Bible.

The book is divided into three main sections:

    Stage One: Finding the Food

Surveying the Shelves: Understanding the Basic Story of the Bible

Considering True Nourishment: Discovering the Transforming Nature of the Bible

    Stage Two: Preparing the Meal

Choosing the Recipe: Pursuing the Treasures of Scripture

Reading the Ingredients: Observing the Text

Understanding the Nutrients: Interpreting the Text

Comparing the Flavors: Correlating the Text

Adding the Spices: Applying the Text

    Stage Three: Serving the Feast

    8. Setting the Table: Preparing to Dig into Gods Word

    9. Tasting a Sample: Learning Where We Fit in the Story

    10. Feeding the Hungry: Presenting the Truth

tweet We must search the Scriptures deliberately, consistently, and intensely.

Swindoll begins the book by giving a helpful overview of the Bible and its history.

Then he teaches through application called, Your Turn in the Kitchen how to observe, interpret, correlate and apply the text.

    Youll learn about:

    observation

To inspect or take not of Scripture, to look carefully, with attention to detail

    interpretation

Coming to an understanding of what the Bible means.

    correlation

Comparing one Scripture with other Scriptures, precept upon precept and line upon line, to amplify our understanding of what the Bible is teaching.

    application

Allowing the truths of Gods Word to grip us in areas that need attention and to call us to action.

I loved the application section because it felt like Swindoll was personally passing along his wisdom and experience.

He outlines the principles of Bible Study in a way that will help you understand, apply and communicate Gods word effectively.

If youre looking to understand the Bible on a deep and meaningful level, then this book would be a great resource.

The Bible doesnt yield its treasures to the lazy soul. WE cant rush through each day and assume that spiritual nourishment will happen automatically.

I grew up listening to Pastor Swindolls sermons over the radio but had never read any of his books until now but Im glad I did. I had been on the hunt for a book like this; on how to study the Scriptures so, it caught my attention when I saw it. Let me start by saying that in all my life, I had never truly STUDIED the Bible. I would only read book after book just like I read chapter after chapter of any romance novel. But I had never learned an effective way to study the Bible, so naturally, the Word had never truly been alive in my Christian walk. Only recently have I developed a deep passion for understanding, memorizing, and teaching the Bible. The Biblical wisdom and scripture maturity of Pastor Swindoll is etched on each page. Each chapter is filled with step by step processes on how to effectively study the scriptures with examples and hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed the theme of preparing a meal with Bible study, it gave a deeper level of understanding to Jesus model prayer on the sermon of the mount, give us this day our daily bread. Pastor Swindoll focuses on 4 points to Bible Study: observation, interpretation, correlation, and application. I had been implementing the last three but I realized through reading this gem, that careful observation is very important. To get the most of one single verse, one must take its time meditating and digging deeper into the meaning. In this fast- paced world, it is human nature to want to zap through verses, chapters, and books to finish as fast as possible. However, Pastor Swindoll, emphasizes the importance of taking the time to delve into scripture with clear observation as if looking through a magnifying glass. I recommend this book to all Christians who simply cant settle but want more from the Bible. This book is an essential to those who teach the Bible in a Sunday school class, small group, or leaders of any form. Thank you, Pastor Swindoll for "passing on the baton"!

Thank you to the publisher for my free electronic copy in exchange for my honest review.

Searching the Scriptures: Find the Nourishment Your Soul Needs is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to take the time and effort to study for themselves rather than simply learning what others have to say. Scripture can be wildly misinterpreted by some, so it is always good to study for yourself. I was reminded of 2 Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth." How better to do that than by studying for yourself? Using similar methods to preparing a meal, Swindoll divides his book into 3 parts:

Stage 1 - Finding the Food

Stage 2 - Preparing the Meal

Stage 3 - Serving the Feast

Swindoll gives you a list of tools needed to help you begin the diligent study of God's Word, including some personal favorites he uses. Since the vast array that is available can be overwhelming, I loved getting his recommendations. Just as a novice cook can be bewildered at where to begin and what to have stocked, so can a new student of the Bible.

Throughout the book, he gives personal examples and instructions, along with homework at the end of each chapter to help you practice. On a personal note, I am not a good cook, but I am told that it is because I don't put time and effort into it. I can see the same principle working here. Instead of a diet of snack food...like memes or or random Facebook posts of Scripture, his goal is to help the reader learn to have the proper tools and ingredients, to study the effect of what does work or not work together (buttermilk, lard, and flour may not be good to eat alone, but mix them together and you can bake amazing biscuits) to create something filling and nourishing for your soul.

Finally, once you have learned how to study Scripture for yourself, you are then better equipped to share it with others...and to teach others how to do this for themselves. Does this look easy? No, I am actually a little intimidated by some of it (even more so than I am a cookbook!), but the reward of knowing I can study Scripture and gain greater understanding is well worth the effort. There are some amazing preachers and teachers to hear, but nothing beats doing it yourself. After all, we are instructed, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." - 1 Peter 3:15. It is always easier to explain something you have learned for yourself.

If you're trying to gain not only a better relationship with God but to also learn His Word, this is a book to have. I enjoy that the book reads well BUT it also has "homework" which makes you use what you read and makes you practice what Charles Swindoll is teaching in this book. I will say it isn't a book to complete in a day. This is a book to savor, take a chapter a day or a chapter every two days so that you can really digest what Swindoll is teaching. This is an well written and added book to my arsenal of study aids.

I received this book from Tyndale in exchange for an HONEST review.
