Publisher's Description

The Story of Boys—Lost in the Twenty-first Century:

  • 70% of all Ds and Fs go to boys

  • 85% of stimulant-addressing medications prescribed in the world are prescribed to US boys

  • Boys are falling behind girls in virtually every area of life

  • 70 -90% of boys will leave the church in their teens and early twenties

Searching for Tom Sawyer offers parents and church leaders a compelling vision and practical principles for how, together, they can change that storyline by forging boys into heroic men.

“More than 70% of the young men who are raised in church abandon it during their teens and twenties … Tim Wright examines the problem and offers real solutions to one of the greatest challenges facing the church today.”
—David Murrow, author of Why Men Hate Going to Church

“No one who cares for boys, and equally no one who cares for kids and families should miss Searching for Tom Sawyer.”
—Leonard Sweet, professor at Drew University and George Fox University

“Tim Wright’s diagnosis of why most of our congregations struggle to connect with guys is eye-opening and stunning … As the father of three boys, I wish I’d had this book years ago. As the pastor of a congregation, I’m glad I have it now.”
—Pastor Jeff Marian, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Burnsville, Minnesota

    Searching for Tom Sawyer

Big surprise. Men are leaving our churches in droves. Boys are right behind them, leaving the future of the church bleak. "Searching for Tom Sawyer: How Parents and Congregations Can Stop the Exodus of Boys from the Church" (WestBow Press, 2013) is Tim Wright's way of addressing the problem, bringing it to our attention, and making some recommendations of what we might do to stop the exodus.

The book consists of 3 parts that tell us a little about the way that boys are wired, what they need from our churches if they are to be engaged into the culture of the church, and what the local church can and should be doing to create the environment that makes church an exciting place for the boys to be.

I enjoyed the sample lessons that Wright included as Appendix B, and can see how they would be useful at a young age. Because of the present reality of the church where I currently worship, I would also like to see something geared for tweens and teens rather than just for the elementary grades. Also helpful is Appendix C which lists resources available to help the boys in the church grow up to be Christian men and leaders.

Overall I found the book to be well written, but wish that it would have gone a little deeper: many of the problems we face in the church today are obvious to even the most casual observer, so I would have liked to have seen the issues explored a little more, root causes, and more in depth solutions. Having said that, sometimes we need to have the obvious pointed out to us, since we get locked into ‘we've always done it this way, and even though the culture and context change, we're not going to change the way we do things.'

On a scale of 1 to 5, I feel comfortable rating this book a 4.5, and will give it to Sunday School Superintendant at our church with a recommendation that she read and heed.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for writing a review.

Tim Wright's book Searching for Tom Sawyer: How Parents and Congregations Can Stop the Exodus is highly endorsed by highly respected church and ministry leaders, educators, life coaches, and businessmen.

At a time when we are seeing the alarming number of an estimated 70% of the young men raised in the church abandoning church involvement in their teens and twenties Tim Wright carefully analyzes the problem and offers positive solutions to the challenge.

    Tim's writing is:

    • Articulate, timely, and relevant

    • Well researched and documented

    • Diagnostic and analytical

    • Practical and Engaging

    • A clarion call to action

A helpful appendix provides suggestions supplementary lessons for parents and class coaches and suggestions for additional, books and programs that reinforce the principles and concepts introduced throughout the book.

Tim's credentials include over twenty-five years as a church pastor, as an established writer, and as a trainer of pastors, Christian educators, and church leaders. The core focus of Tim's message is a challenge and call call for: "Parents and congregations, partnering together to lead our boys into manhood_in a heroic quest to follow Jesus."

Searching for Tom Sawyer is must reading for of every pastor, youth director, family counselor, and Christian parent.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.
