A Scrapbook Of Christmas Firsts is a wonderful reminder of the beauty and simplicity of Christmas. Typically a season when life moves far too fast, and moments come and go without being enjoyed or appreciated, Christmas can almost seem a burden, far from the celebration of that First Christmas. This book is dedicated to help uncomplicate Christmas, offering fresh ideas, heartwarming stories, meaningful Scripture, and more.

With pages displayed in a beautiful scrapbooking style, every chapter is outlined the same way: A story telling of a family’s Christmas together, Scripture for the season, origins of Christmas traditions, vintage poetry, favorite things, personal Christmas traditions, holiday trivia, and recipes. But each offering is filled with warmth and poignancy that brings the flavor of the holidays right through the pages.

This book is written so that you can read it in one setting, or in short bursts, as time allows. But every reading offers “stories to warm your heart and simplify your holidays”. My favorite sections were the “Favorite Things” of the authors. Favorite books, favorite gifts received, favorite hot drinks... all were fun and idea inspiring. But best of all, this book leaves behind the materialism of our culture and focuses on what is truly important about Christmas: family, love, giving, and most importantly, the Savior.

This would make a great gift book, or one for rediscovering the joy of Christmas year after year. -- Tracey Bonsell, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Not Just Another Little Christmas BookWith shopping, cooking, recitals, and services all piled on top of our daily chores and tasks, how many of us lose sight of what's meaningful, for days at a time, every Christmas? What if you could have one tool to keep that from happening?A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts is only ten chapters long, each themed with a verse of the Christmas story from Matthew and Luke. Chapters are then stuffed with categorized features like Family Snapshot, Gingerbread Genealogy, Vintage Poetry and Lyrics, Peppermints for Little Ones, Stocking Stuffer Tradition, Gift for You, Evergreen Thumb, A Few of Our Favorite Things, Trivia Treasures, Bethlehem Star, Morning Star Light, and Word Quilter's Wisdom. Every reader will be inspiredin each chapter, learn things, enjoy memories, and consider new family traditions. Consider new ways to help the needy with their holiday. I'm not a guy who will be trying out the new recipes, but I hope to be eating them.A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts should be as much a part of your holiday as the family Christmas-fying their home with wreaths and decorations. If ever there was a book printed for seasonal bathroom reading, this is it; pack it away in that first box you open every year, and then annually, drop it in the reading basket. Young, old, and everyone between will find something memorable in this little Christmas book.By Frank Creed, novelist and manuscript critiquer for thefinishers.biz

What makes this book so charming you might ask? It is full of sweet stories, recipes, trivia, lyrics, poetry, Bible verses and even questions that all 6 ladies answer from their individual viewpoint and all of these things relate to Christmas. Its a beautiful book that would make a lovely present or display nicely where guests can flip through it.I loved the story of the grade school girl selling Christmas cards door-to-door after her daddy died and my eyes welled up at Trish's story of her Little Angel Girl Ornament. There are recipes I want to try and thoughts that make me think. Overall this is a beautiful book that would be treasured by anyone who loves Christmas.

This is a cute little hard back book that has neat little stories good to set on the coffee table for easy to read at your finger tips. Long story how I got this book to review but I must say persistence pays off. This book was complied by six different ladies and very cleverly done. They each contributed to each of the ten chapters with ideas and stories from Thanksgiving in December to December Tranquility; Once Upon A Christmas to Holiday Hospitality and more cute chapter titles; ten to be exact. Each chapter also has glossy, colorful scrapbook type looking pages with things such as:Family Snapshot, Gingerbread Genealogy, Vintage Poetry and lyrics, Peppermints for Little Ones, Stocking Stuffer Traditions, Gift for You, Cookie Canister, Evergreen Thumb, A Few of Our Favorite, Trivia Treasures, Bethlehem Star, Morning Star Light and Word Quilters' Wisdom. I'm sure out of one of these sections you'll find some helpful hints for you holidays.

I opened the book and the first page I turned to was "Christmas at the Waffle House." Within a few minutes, I was already misty eyed from reading that story. The authors share personal stories: a Christmas campout, decorations, ornaments, wassail, snowfall, and special gifts including an extra special high school diploma. Scriptures, recipes, carols all are gifts of heart and hearth that will sustain the reader through the holidays. A perfect gift!No need to wrap because of the sparkle cover.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Cathy Messecar
Located in: Montgomery, TX
Submitted: October 04, 2008

Tell us a little about yourself.  Hi, I'm Cathy Messecar co-author of A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts ~ With Stories to Warm Your Heart and Tips to Simplify Your Holiday. I live on a farm in Texas, Leaning Tree Acres, the birthplace of the Texas flag. I'm a newspaper columnist, a wife, mother and grandmother. And I wholeheartedly enjoy the Christmas season.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Several years ago, I wrote a newspaper column about my husband David and my first Christmas together when he returned from Vietnam. The story resonated with readers, and they told me their "first" stories. The idea for a book of “Christmas Firsts” was born from that and morphed into a collection of other first stories that happened at Christmas, such as adopting children, a foster child finding a home, a great grandmother making her first snow angel, a first high school diploma for a WWII veteran, etc. Some really neat stories emerged. I asked five friends to join me on the project and they share “Evergreen Thumb Tips,” recipes in the “Cookie Canister” sections, activities for kids in “Peppermints for Little Ones,” trivia, olde Christmas poetry and lyrics, simple do-at-home projects. I'm so excited about this project because the publisher did a wonderful job of expressing what I wanted in the book, even exceeding my expectations. I wanted to tell families it's OK to not do everything at Christmas. It's OK to do less in order to connect with family, and I think we give our readers many ideas and share our traditions. I also wanted a gift book about Christmas that will guide families back to their communities and homes as the center of the Christmas celebration, and back to the birth of Jesus.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Peace. Calm. A renewed fervor to simplify the holidays and enjoy the people around them.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I've worked on finalizing this project with my co-authors for about a year, and while doing it, I'd play Christmas carols in July, so I'm so ready for Christmas to be here this year and to implement some of my friend's suggestions for bringing families together.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I like to read a variety of Christian authors and listen to different artists. Local authors I enjoy reading are Kathleen Y'Barbo, Janice Thompson and Donn Taylor, most write fiction. Lynn Anderson, Mark Hamilton, Tim Riter, Cecil Murphey, and Darrell Tippens are also favorites, most often writing inspirational and informational.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I encourage readers to find ways to relax and personally reflect on the Christmas season. It is a time of year when we can get caught up in the glitz and periphery of activities instead of settling in our hearts to spend the season adoring The Christ. A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts will help you to travel from the commercial Christmas, to find your way home to family and friends and sincere celebrations that reflect the birth of a Savior.
