"Jim's witness is a powerful testimony and I'm sure that his book will have an eternal impact. I plan to make it required reading for my grandchildren." -Shirley Train, English teacher and editor
"My encounter with Jim Rapp in the 1990's had been a divine encounter. As a missionary-pastor based in Hong Kong, I can attest to the authenticity of Jim's testimonies in China. As a friend, Jim's faith and miraculous experiences have inspired me all along. As I read the book, I relived many memories of the experiences and discussions we've had. This book is a modern testimony to the power of a Spirit-filled life." -Pastor Rene Lussier, Lighthouse Ministries, Hong Kong
"After reading your book I now have for the first time in a long time my zeal back to fulfill those ministry opportunities that God has opened. Thank you. If for no other reason, you wrote it for me." -Pastor Ron Charles, author, Biblical archeologist, missionary to Middle East
"'A Scientist in the Shadow of God' is an extremely readable and intriguing testimony of a lay missionary who cleverly blends evangelical work with business activities. The account of his unique spirit-led journey with God is liberally dotted with referenced scripture verses so that readers will not only enjoy the story but will also go through practical bible study lessons. This book is a two-in-one must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the exciting Christian life." -Eng Seng Chew, Singaporean businessman
"Encouraging and uplifting! Jim has surely been used as a vessel of honor to further the Kingdom of God. The stories were so moving, I couldn't put the book down!" -Carolyn Ackerman, businesswoman

After I started to read A Scientist in the Shadow of God, I couldn't close the book. I kept it open on the table and continued to read it whenever I had a few minutes. -Kitty Rapp, sister-in-law to James Rapp
"A Scientist in the Shadow of God is written in such a way that you feel like you are walking through these experiences with Jim. Each experience was so interestingly written that you can feel the anxiety of each moment as he walks you through how God used him and how the Holy Spirit led him step by step. I could feel the emotions he had with each experience while trusting God for everything when he was in that moment." -Glenna Taylor, businesswoman
A Scientist in the Shadow of God is written with a lovely simplicity in the very best sense of the word. Fascinating and informative description about the underground church of China. It is made so much more relevant and meaningful when actual people and families lives are portrayed; you feel you know them. The reader becomes a willing traveler in his journey." -Paige Price, retired librarian
"Congratulations on the book you're writing! You've done a great job. The details you've filled in well." -Lila Joseph, missionary to Japan
"I like that you see God's activity is in so many of the 'small' details of your life." -Pastor Eric Wright, Crossroads Vineyard, Dayton, OH

Tell us a little about yourself. I have engineering degrees from University of Toledo and was selected a distinguished alumnus in 1998. My name is on 33 US patents resulting from many years of research at a large glass company. One invention became a business that required much travel around the world. These travels often resulted in opportunities to share the gospel not only locally but as far away as Japan and in the underground church of China. My Biblical training came from a number of sources over many years including international conferences in the U.S. and in Singapore.
What was your motivation behind this project? The original intent to write this book was to record my experiences so that my future generations would know about their Christian heritage (Ps. 102:18). However, so many additional people requested copies of the manuscript that I decided to publish it in a book form.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that those reading this book will realize how an average person can supernaturally walk in the Spirit. This book shows how the scriptures and the gifts of the Holy Spirit can be used to respond to the needs of others by being in the right place at the right time. We usually refer to this as 'life-style evangelism.'
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? While remembering the details of the events in this book, I realized how naturally the Holy Spirit works through a layperson who is open to His leading. Even in dangerous situations, He is faithful to protect His servants. More than once did I have to wipe tears from my eyes while recording the stories of His faithfulness.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? The person who had the greatest impact on my life was David Wilkerson who wrote his testimony in the book 'The Cross and the Switchblade.' His experiences were so profound and so exciting that I immediately desired a similar walk in the Spirit. Other Biblical teachers who impacted my life include Bob Mumford, Marilyn Hickey and Oral Roberts. Their Biblical teachings and personal experiences encouraged me to reach beyond my natural abilities and personal expectations.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I would like to encourage each Christian to find the path that the Lord has prepared for him and not to be afraid to walk that path (Eph. 2:10). He should also learn how to operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit and expect the Holy Spirit to manifest them in that walk. I hope each person reading this book will be greatly encouraged to be the next one to 'walk in the shadow of God.'
