In keeping with the Saxon philosophy, this curriculum builds on prior learning, and presents information in small, carefully sequenced increments. Covering consonants, vowels, and reading comprehension, the program offers explicit, systematic strategies for decoding and spelling words. Consumable work sheets, speed drills, and vocabulary tests reinforce learning and provide daily reading opportunities. Students also learn dictionary skills through progressively difficult alphabetizing activities.
The teacher's manual includes all lessons, assessments, speed drills, word lists, and reduced versions of student materials. Kit includes a teacher's manual, student workbook, and classroom materials. Grades 4 and up.

JanBo5 Stars Out Of 5Saxon Phonics InterventionAugust 15, 2017JanBoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I am a tutor. This product may seem a bit "boring", but it works. I have used it to teach both older students and adults how to read. They had been through the school system and could read on a very basic level (road signs, basic sight words), but nothing more. After we got through the first few lessons they were EXCITED. When they read their first passages there were tears (from grown boys and men). We coded on wipe boards rather then the workbook. My students made their own vocabulary flash cards, a part of ownership. They really enjoyed reading passages about American History as their practices. I would not use this with a young student. Saxon Phonics and Spelling 1 is my choice for them.

He is in 4th grade and reading like a 1st grader. He's been progressively getting better at reading with each of our lessons. I thought in the beginning that it was too basic for him. Boy was I wrong. While he can read (from memory) bigger words he is struggling with the small ones! Starting at basic was the best thing!!!!
Jan4 Stars Out Of 5June 23, 2008JanThe system is a very thorough lesson plan that starts out with the most basic concepts and moves slowly and carefully from there. I expect it to be helpful in showing me just where my son goes off-track in spelling and reading. Only one complaint: a video tape to get started and a cassette tape for pronunciation help are included---old technology to say the least!
Susan5 Stars Out Of 5June 15, 2004SusanThis is a wonderful program. I used it for my 5th grader who was still having a hard time spelling and doing writing exercises. He could read well enough but really lacked phonic skills. He can finally spell!! This product is worth every penny I spent. It starts with every simple sound and moves to the most difficult. Students learn to "code" words and see a pattern. It also enhances vocabulary. It contains lots of flashcards that you can take anywhere or create games with them. This was the BEST program I have ever used! Very easy to follow and my son loved it.
Ask a Question▼▲
Q: Do I need the additional teaching materials purchased separately? Do I need the $48 separately purchased teaching materials to make this program work? Please expand on your answer, please! Thank you sooooo much!
No, the Teaching Tools are already included in the Homeschool Kit. You would only need to purchase them separately if you are using the kit for more than one student, since they are consumable.
Q: How long is a daily lesson? How long does each daily lesson take on an average?
Each lesson should take approximately 1 hour, but could be longer or shorter, depending on the amount of student/teacher interaction and whether you choose to complete optional activities.
