Saxon Math is a great program. One of the things I like the best is that it teaches math fact memorization by way of pattern recognition. My children have done very well in this program. As their teacher, I see how well the methodology works.
I bought this to help my twins review 2nd grade material which they struggled with. We are working on this over the summer. They will be going into 3rd at a local Catholic school. I actually wish our school used this curriculum. It follows a logical progression with lots of review of concepts throughout. The activities are great. The manipulatives kit is wonderful and a must have. We will definitely continue to use it through 3rd grade I'm sure. But it was pricey in my opinion. My only other criticism is that the teacher/parent edition is not laid out as well. I have to really sit and review and read through a lot of stuff in order to follow the lesson. Not a big deal, but I would prefer to be able to quickly review and just do it.
My daughter started Saxon Math in a traditional school setting. Now that I am homeschooling, I am continuing this curriculum. While I have a math degree, I still feel like anyone can do this with their kids. It is easy to grasp a new concept while reviewing the old. With Saxon's constant review, she flies through the majority of the worksheet, with a newer concept offering more of a challenge on the page. This gives us plenty of opportunity to lay the groundwork for higher math to come, reinforcing neatness, organization of calculations, and labeling answers to word problems. Saxon makes it easy to teach!
