I would recommend this program to any first time home schooling parent who needs a thorough program for their child. The teachers manual is great; it tells you what you need for each lesson and gives you a script for each day's meeting. The assessments have been great too. It gives me a better picture of where she's at so we can speed up or slow down as needed.

I used Saxon for other grades for my other children, and I trust the material. I would recommend Saxon for the lower grades, up to around Grade 5. After that, my children found it too tedious. The only reason I gave quality an average rating is because the paper used in the workbooks is thin and there is no color.
DragonMamaSeattle, WAAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5great for struggling learnersNovember 27, 2011DragonMamaSeattle, WAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I've never used a heavily scripted curriculum like this. I'm primarily an unschooler. However, my son gets overwhelmed easily and needs a lot of repetition. This curriculum is terrific for him because each lesson has a clear beginning, a clear end, and no way for mama to go off on an interesting tangent! The information is presented in manageable bites so it's not too scary. He actually started laughing in relief after the first lesson!
I would not recommend this for a quick independent learner. My youngest daughter is using a different curriculum that is more suitable for fast-paced self instruction at the early levels. Saxon is good for self-study at the 4/5 level, but not at the 1 level.
