Publisher's Description

In Sammy and His Shepherd, veteran children’s writer Susan Hunt takes youngsters on a delightful trip through Psalm 23 from the point of view of a sheep named Sammy.

Sammy lives happily under the care of his faithful shepherd. But one day he meets a sheep from another flock, one who lives in misery because her shepherd is not so caring. Eventually, to the delight of both of them, Sammy’s shepherd buys the needy little sheep for his flock and gives her a name—Precious. Thereafter, Sammy tells Precious all the wonderful things about their shepherd. At first, Precious has a hard time believing that the shepherd can be so good. But eventually, as she sees the shepherd pouring out his energies for the good of his flock, she comes to trust him, for she sees that he loves his sheep unconditionally and sacrificially.

Each chapter of Sammy and His Shepherd is an exploration of a passage from Psalm 23. As they work through the book, children will grow in their understanding of the metaphors the psalmist used in composing this beloved poem. But more important, they will gain a deeper appreciation for the one who is the subject of the psalm: the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Captivating illustrations by Corey Godbey help Sammy and Precious come to life for children. A special section in the back of the book provides Bible passages, discussion questions, and activities to reinforce the lessons of each chapter.

Author Bio

Susan Hunt is the author of more than twelve books, including Women’s Ministry in the Local Church with Ligon Duncan, and four other children’s titles. Susan speaks at women’s conferences in several countries and her books have been translated into several languages.

Sammy and His Shepherd by Susan Hunt is a retelling of the 23rd Psalm from the perspective of a lamb (representing a child of God) describing what it is like to be cared for by a gracious, loving, and protective shepherd (God Almighty). Sammy, the narrator sheep, is taught lessons by an older sheep known to everyone as Grandmother, who explains that a good shepherd makes sure that his sheep have plenty of food and water, lots of contented rest, protection from predators, and even moments of rescue and recovery if they wander into dark valleys.

The book's artwork is presented in extremes, such as showing the evils aspects of the world in dark purples, swirling grays, and heavy blacks, and the glorious aspects of the world in bright pinks, yellows, and greens. The original psalm text is printed in the front of the book, and then eleven chapters focus on various aspects of its message. At the back of the book there are notes and suggestions to adults as to how to discuss the meaning of the psalm with a youngster. Overall, Sammy and His Shepherd is a cute story with a helpful message about Psalm 23. – Dr. Dennis E. Hensley,

"Susan Hunt leads children through Psalm 23, one verse at a time, looking in detail at a shepherd’s care through the eyes of his sheep. Sammy and His Shepherd explains important doctrines in simple and concise terms and points out how those doctrines about our Shepherd should impact the everyday lives of His sheep. "Sammy and His Shepherd is a delightful book for children. Written as an imaginative story narrated by a young lamb, this book does a skillful exposition of Psalm 23. It even includes some great talking points for each chapter. Susan Hunt’s skills as a writer and rich theological insights are beautifully crafted into this story. Here is a book children will grow into and never outgrow."

-- Tedd Tripp

"I gave Susan Hunt’s latest book the real test: I began reading it out loud to my rambunctious five-year-old. He was immediately charmed by her storytelling ability and would not let me stop. Sammy and His Shepherd combines rich, theologically informed understanding with sanctified creativity to reveal the green pastures of God’s sovereign grace in all its loveliness."

-- Douglas Bond

“In this lovely book on the best-loved psalm, Susan Hunt engages the attention in a delightful way. I would encourage families to use this book and take advantage of the clear teaching, which points to the Good Shepherd who loves children and demonstrated that love so gloriously at Calvary.”
