Nancy Guthrie takes an in-depth look at a sampling of the people whose stories are interwoven with Jesus' story. From John the Baptist to the Apostle Paul, Jesus' family to Caiaphas, and others, we encounter both "saints and scoundrels" and in every case, Nancy helps us to see elements of ourselves. Nancy does a good job of taking a one-dimensional person off the page and helping us see the three-dimensional person with motives, emotions, strengths and weaknesses, just like our own. It is one thing to read about the Pharisees; it is another to consider how I am like them. Or to skim over the oft-heard story of the "wee little man in a sycamore tree", and to examine my own heart for areas requiring repentance and change. I was convicted and challenged as I read this book to become more like Jesus. A special touch are the words of old and familiar hymns, perfectly chosen and woven so beautifully into the end of each chapter. The book ends with a discussion guide for each chapter, making this an excellent resource for group study.

Note: While written for women (primary use of feminine pronouns, for example: "A saint is someone who has been humbled by the reality of her sinful impulses,.."), there is nothing about the material that makes it specific to women or less applicable for men.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher (Crossway) in exchange for my review.
