The new pope chose St. Francis as his namesake. By doing so, according to Loehr, he identifies himself with love for the church, love of the cross, love of peace, love of the poor, and love for humility. She points out how vital each topic was in the life of Jesus and St. Francis, and in current initiatives under this pontiff. Paperback.
Why did the pope choose the name Francis?
St. Francis lived a life of dedication to the Gospel. In choosing this great saint as patron, Pope Francis signaled early on that his papacy would reflect a profound embrace of that same Gospel. Gina Loehr, with Al Giambrone, examines five Gospel values important to both men: humility, charity, church, peace, and joy. For each value, there is a chapter containing a Scripture reflection, examples from the lives of St. Francis and Pope Francis, relevant Church teaching, and questions for reflection.
Gina Loehr holds a master’s degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville. She currently teaches theology part-time at Marian University of Wisconsin. She is the author of Choosing Beauty and The Four Teresas.
Al Giambrone is professor emeritus of mathematics at Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio, where he taught for thirty-eight years. He is also a student of the saints. Al and his wife have three childrenone of whom is Gina Loehrand seven grandchildren.
