52 Experiences in Unhurried Honesty with God
If yesterdays word was "simple," tomorrows word will be "slow."
Our culture is shifting from fast food to health food both physically and spiritually. Self-care, soul-care, life coaches, and spiritual retreats all show our dissatisfaction in quick fixes and fast faith. The Sacred Slow is an invitation to unhurried honesty before God. Formatted as 52 experiences, The Sacred Slow reminds readers on every page that God never wanted to use them: He always wanted to love them.
Experienced devotionally or in small groups, each chapter features a short but unexpected reading and two options for application: a thought focus or a heart exercise. The content is the overflow of Dr. Alicia Britt Choles thirty+ years as a spiritual mentor to leaders and learners. The tone is personal, practical, and penetrating. The fruit is sustainable (as opposed to event-based) intimacy with God.
An award-winning writer, Dr. Alicia Britt Choles messages address both head and heart and are often described as grace-filled surgeries. Alicia is a speaker, author, and leadership mentor who enjoys thunderstorms, jalapenos, and honest questions. beckieAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5sacred slow reviewDecember 26, 2017beckieAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0"The Sacred Slow: A Holy Departure from Fast Faith" by Alicia Britt Chole is a formatted devotion of types book. Each section is called a Movement. There are twelve. Each movement is divided into parts and includes a guided response. The book is designed to be taken slowly and with depth. It is rather complicated. It is not for everybody. I had a hard time with the book, it seemed to be above my understanding most of the time. It is definitely an intellectual and penetrating book. I would suggest using this in a small group setting with a pastor or counselor guiding the readers. gccbookworm4 Stars Out Of 5An Intentional JourneyNovember 30, 2017gccbookwormQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Life is hectic. It's hard to squeeze in our faith, particularly practicing what one believes. We want everything to be as quick as Google. But Alicia Britt Chole has a different message about faith in "The Sacred Slow." Inside the covers of this devotional one will discover an intimacy with God, how to intentionally feed the soul, and grow one's faith and relationship with God. Each of the 52 chapters are broken down into readings with reflective questions or as Chole calls it "guided responses." Together, moving at one's own pace, the exercises move one to intentionally experience God and his love. This is not a book to breeze through if one wants to get the most out of it. It is truly a journey of self-discovery. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Handlebar Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review
Stacey5 Stars Out Of 5Amazing Read that Brings PeaceNovember 29, 2017StaceyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5First, I would like to extend a heartfelt Thank you to Alicia Britt Chloe and her publisher for sending me a copy of "The Sacred Slow" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.
The Sacred Slow by Alicia Britt Chloe is a really cool devotional/study book! This book is meant to be savored, not quickly power-read! This is a very deliberate and methodical read that is designed to be chewed on for maximum benefit to your relationship with God. This book is so much more than a read. It is also filled with challenges to put what youre learning into practice.
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life and especially now during the holidays, Ive chosen to take one experience every week so I can really contemplate what Alicia is presenting. This was easy to wrap my mind around since the book contains 52 experiences one for each week of the year. When I go on vacation in another week, I believe I will keep this pace because Ive enjoyed taking my time with this.
So often I find I am not applying Gods truth to my life because Im doing so much: teaching Sunday school, leading a BSF discussion group, participating in choir and praise team, working full time and caring for a husband and a few dogs. What Ive discovered through reading this book at a relaxed pace is that God can accomplish much through me when I put Him first.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Very practical and helpful bookNovember 27, 2017bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I found the material in this book to be extremely helpful in my own spiritual life. Anyone who has longed for sustained intimacy with Jesus will find help here. An intimate relationship with Jesus won't just happen. One has to be spiritually intentional. Chole gives readers the tools for such a journey.
I really like that readers are required to do personal soul work before venturing further to developing an intimate relationship with Jesus. That section of the book answered many questions for me and addressed many possible obstacles along the way.
I have never seen this kind of progression in spiritual transformation before. Chole takes readers step by step on the spiritual walk. I felt like I had a personal mentor helping me. I gained new insight into what it means to have Christ at the center of my life. I gained new wonder for God's Word and really appreciated the instruction on relating to, not merely using, the Bible.
This is a book one will work through, not just read. The last quarter of the book contains places for writing in response to the questions in each chapter. There are also exercises for each chapter, steps designed to get the reader in the habit of intentionally moving forward in spiritual formation.
I found this book to be very thought provoking and encouraging as I work on being attentive to God and His work in my life. This is a book I'll return to time and again. I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Handlebar. My comments are an independent and honest review.
