Running for my Life by Lopez Lomong with Mark Tabb is an amazing true story of the life of Lopez Lomong from his childhood kidnapping during church services in his home village in Sudan to his life in the USA as an Olympic track star. Lopez, no matter the kidnapping, the starvation, or the hard work never gave up. When he was in the refugee camp he made the decision to be baptized and the chaplain renamed him Joseph. Lopez identified with Joseph of the Bible who was also kidnapped from his family and placed into slavery but God had meant it for good. Lopez also believed God had a better plan for him and believed that God meant his life for good. This book bells of that better plan that God had and how hard that Lopez worked to get there. He always appreciated it whenever anyone helped him. Though he has much materially in America he never forgot the Sudan village from which he spent his first 6 years. He now helps provide precious water, food, education, and medical needs for that village which they so desperately need.

I loved this book. It is the best. It made me proud to be an American and sorry that I don't appreciate my country as much as Lopez does. Thank you for reminding me just how truly blessed that I am to have spent my entire life in the USA. Because of reading this book may I never take for granted my many blessings. You've just gotta read this book.

This memoir of struggle and redemption is one of the best books of the year. Lomong's story, being stolen at six years old to become a child soldier, to struggling to adapt to American culture, and finally finding success on track, is one that will leave you in awe long after you finish the last page. It is even better than fiction because it is all true! It redefines what is possible though hard work, dedication, and faith.

Spoken in his own words, Lopez's playful spirit shines through even the darkest hours of his tale. His faith is a constant throughout the book and his devotion draws me closer to Christ. He words are a testimony to the strength of God and his ever-presence in our lives!

It is perfect for all audiences! It completely redefined the way I approach struggle and is much more a story of triumph than about track and field. It is a book centered around an amazing athlete - a two time Olympian - but ultimately this is a tale that has changed the way I live my life. I am compelled to action and will be a life-long supporter of Lomong and the great work his does on and off the track.

Bravo Lopez! Keep inspiring the world! GO USA!!

    Running for My Life

One Lost Boy's Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games

Lopez Lomong © 2012 by Joseph L Lomong, aka Lopez Lomong (with Mark Tabb)

    Thomas Nelson Publishers

    ISBN 978-1-59555-515-1

    227 pp. Hdbk.

Running for My Life, a true story, reads like a novel and will inspire readers that God can bring great changes to lives that seem to have no future.

Lopez Lomong, a U.S. Olympic athlete, ran everywhere for pleasure as a young boy in Sudan. One Sunday, when Lopez was six years old, children in a church service were kidnapped by soldiers and held prisoners in a tiny house far from their home. There the children either died of malnutrition and disease or were trained to be soldiers.

One dark night, three older boys helped Lopez escape. They ran for three nights, sleeping during the day. Lopez thought they were heading back to his village but discovered they'd reached Kenya and a refugee camp. He spent the next ten years there, although the three older boys disappeared. Even trying for years, he's never located them again. Knowing the hand of God has always been on his life, he wonders if the boys were angels.

When Lopez was sixteen, Catholic Charities helped an American family adopt him. He learned to trust them and to slowly understand American culture. In 2008 he ran in the Olympics for the US and met President and Mrs. Bush.

His proudest moment arrived three years later, when he graduated from college. Now he works to help people in Africa through the Lopez Lomong Foundation, creating schools, bringing better agricultural methods and health improvements and meeting other dire needs.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson BookSneeze, with no requirements for what I write in my review other than to post the review on my blog and one commercial site.

This book is a true story about a young boy and his horrific experiences of being ripped from his family in South Sudan to be used as a child soldier during the civil war in his home country. He tells of the trials, challenges and seemingly impossible barriers that he had to overcome just to survive. Lopez's story is inspiring and eye opening as he shares his journey from deplorable circumstances to the amazing opportunity to come to America and realize his dream of becoming an Olympian in track and field.

The story of Lopez's life was beyond comprehension! The book was so fascinating that I was unable to put it down and finished it the same day I started it. His honesty, faith and willingness to share openly about his journey was compelling and inspiring. Anyone with an interest in sports or biographies will be drawn completely into his story. The desires Lopez has to give back to his home country is remarkable and no doubt he will achieve what he sets out to do. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and already have told many about it.

An amazing story of the grace of God and of personal courage, United States Olympian Lopez Lomong shares his story in his new book, Running for My Life.

Once in a great while I read a book that is so interesting that I read it through very quickly. With Running for My Life, that was the case. Whereas I thought I would enjoy reading about Lomong's Olympic experience, I found myself captivated by the details of his capture by, and escape from, Sudanese rebels; his experiences in the refugee camp; his flight to the United States (not eating in-flight meals because he knew he had no money); to his assimilation in the Syracuse, NY area after being adopted by loving parents and how they learned Lomong was a runner.

But the story doesn't end there. And not at the 2008 Beijing Olympics either where Lomong served as the flag-bearer for the delegation from the United States. Lomong has graduated from college, revisited his homeland and been reunited with his family in Sudan and has brought his brothers to the United States following their own adoption. He's even started a foundation, 4SouthSudan, to benefit his native homeland.

Having young sons myself who are about the age Lomong was when he was abducted as well as having a good friend who last year adopted two sons from Ethiopia, this book was especially powerful. This is much more than a story about an Olympic track and field athlete.

I highly recommend Running for My Life and I'll be rooting for Lopez Lomong in the Summer Olympics in London.
