Author Bio

About the author, Dr. Paul H. Wright of Jerusalem University College: Dr. Paul H. Wright is President of Jerusalem University College (the Institute of Holy Land Studies) located on historic Mt. Zion adjacent to the old walled city of Jerusalem. He also teaches courses on the culture, history and geography of the lands of the Bible. Over the years Dr. Wright has led thousands of Christian college and university students, as well as adults, on field studies throughout Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Egypt and the Sinai, many to out-of-the-way places not normally seen by students of the Bible. He is also an instructor in an advanced educational program for licensed Israeli tour guides at the Yad Ben-Zvi Institute in Jerusalem, and at Tantur, a Christian research center between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Dr. Wright holds the BA degree in anthropology from Bethel College (now Bethel University), an MA degree in the history of ancient Israel from the Institute of Holy Land Studies, an MA degree in Old Testament from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and the M Phil and PhD degrees in Bible and Ancient Near East from Hebrew Union College. He is also an ordained minister and has, over the years, been an effective teacher in both adult and children's church ministries. He and his wife Diane have lived in Jerusalem for fifteen years, and raised their two children there. They are active members of East Jerusalem Baptist Church, a small congregation that represents an active mix of dedicated people from all over the world who live and minister in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Dr. Wright finds his time in Jerusalem to be very fulfilling. "As a written record of God's work in the world, the Bible is a book that is quite real. It is a privilege to be able to explore the realities of the world of the Bible with so many students who are eager to learn on-site. There are clear connections between the ways that the people who lived in the lands of the Bible thought about God and organized their lives in ancient times, and how folks living in the same places respond to the Divine tug today. The longer I live in Jerusalem, the more I am learning to appreciate the consistent call of God on His people, and our responsibility to live whole lives that are characterized by shalom, the peace that only He can give."

Endorsements

"In this integration of biography, history and geography, Paul Wright applies his considerable knowledge of the land to the life and times of people in both the Old and New Testaments. In his capable hands readers will see the characters of the Bible come to life in the context of the very real world in which they lived. Whether readers have been through the Bible fifty times or this is their first, the pictures, maps and extremely readable text will lead them to fresh insight into this greatest of stories."
Dr. John Walton, Professor of Old Testament, Wheaton College

"It is a pleasure to recommend this atlas by the biblical scholar and experienced historical geographer, Paul Wright. Nothing is more important than the relationships of the great men and women of the Bible with God and with the land that God gave them. Wright provides the best possible introduction, with outstanding texts, maps, and photos, for the adventure of guiding the reader through the stories of the Bible."
Richard S. Hess, Ph.D., Earl S. Kalland Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, Denver Seminary

"This is a book that I would highly recommend for anyone looking for help understanding the role of the physical setting of the Bible, the cultural milieu across the centuries it covers, and the unique literary usage of place in the narratives of the both the Old and New Testament. Wright is to be commended for producing such a clear, nuanced, and accurate text, and Rose should be thanked for making it available to us in such an attractive and helpful format."
—J. Michael Thigpen, Executive Director of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS).
(His educational background includes a B.A. in Religious Studies from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; a M.Div. from Columbia International University; and a M.Phil. from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.) See the "review section" to read his full review.

Greatness, Grace, and Glory [the original title of the book] anchors individual, biblical stories in real time and real place. Through Wright's careful study of the Bible and his exceptional descriptions the land, both major and minor characters are brought to life in their historical, cultural and geographical contexts. Without losing sight of the overarching biblical narrative, Wright expertly fashions this book to be used as both a history book and a Bible atlas, making it a valuable resource for any student of the Bible.
Cynthia Parker, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham UK. Teaches in Israel

This is a terrific volume for reading the Bible and its cast of characters in context. The combination of text and illustration is wonderful. Among the chapters, I was particularly taken with the treatment of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, and the way that Wright was able to take these "minor" characters and assist readers in a fuller grasp of a classic tale.
Dr. J. Andrew Dearman, Professor of Old Testament, Associate Dean, Fuller Theological Seminary

By depicting biblical movements of faith and life within their geographical and historical contexts, Greatness, Grace & Glory [the original title], provides an invaluable resource for biblical readers and scholars seeking to "walk the Bible" with informed and realistic imagination. Dr. Paul Wright's expert analysis and beautiful photography that accompanies the vivid maps provide the kind of insight that helps anyone who reads, studies, or teaches the Bible understand and appreciate the drama of Scripture filled with the actions of immigrants, invaders, refugees, tyrants, captives, and missionaries on the stage of the biblical lands and seas.
Linford Stutzman, PhD, Director Biblical Lands Educational Seminars and Service, Eastern Mennonite Seminary

If you're looking for a resource that really gives you a "feel" for what's going on as you read the Bible, here it is. Combining first-hand expertise in the historical-geographical settings of the Bible with keen spiritual and theological insight, Paul Wright takes us on a journey through the pages of redemptive history. The biblical characters come to life against the backdrop of their own time and place and their faith-journey illuminates our own. I highly recommend this unique atlas of biblical biography.
Dr. Larry R. Helyer, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Taylor University, Upland, IN

If you want a Bible Atlas that goes beyond putting places on a map, this book is for you. I have used Rose’s Then and Now Bible Maps PowerPoint for some time now to show me where things are or were located. It is a great tool for that. Doctor Wright has produced a unique and magnificent atlas framed around the events and people of the Bible. Each page contains pictures, maps, and discussions based around a central person or persons. It is well organized and easy to use, especially if you are studying a particular person or time during the Bible. It adds depth to any study along with other resources such as commentaries and dictionaries… I want to thank Rose Publishing for providing an advanced copy of this book for review. The copy was provided as a PDF file which is an exact digital image of the printed book. I will be adding this book to my reference library. It is indispensable.—Robert Bock, Rose reviewer and blogger
