Product Description

Formerly published as a four-volume set by Eerdmans, CBD now brings Barnhouse's classic commentary Romans back to life in this handsome two-volume set.

Using his own translation, Barnhouse provides a comprehensive exegetical treatment of Paul's letter to the Romans that is renowned for its depth of insight, yet highly accessible to all readers. Though a respected scholar, Barnhouse spent most of his career as a dedicated pastor and was praised widely for his unusual ability to make the biblical message clear and practical.

In Romans Barnhouse uses Paul's famous epistle as a jumping-off point for a detailed exposition of core biblical doctrines. He proceeds phrase-by-phrase through the text and long the way each passage is examined in its immediate context and then related to broader biblical teaching. This allows Barnhouse to faithfully adhere to the Reformation maxim that Scripture interprets Scripture, and that it is perspicuous (clear) in its teaching, infallible, and authoritative Thus, his focus on Romans becomes an exposition on the doctrines of the entire Bible.

Reader's new to Barnhouse with appreciate his distinctive and lucid writing, while those familiar will again be able to hear a faithful and classic presentation of the Bible's message.

Never thought that I would be able to read through two such enormous volumes but I loved every moment of it. It took me the better part of a year to get through the whole thing but it was worth the time and energy to read it all. I love Dr.Barnhouse's dedication to Biblical truth. 5 stars!!!

I've been reading modern biblical criticism for a few years am always more amazed how very smart people set out to contend for the most abstruse and convoluted theory, method or point of contention imaginable with so little result. The intention is contention from the start and it leads down the most elaborate corridors of speculation about (recent) speculation... on and on and on.

I stumble onto Barnhouse/Romans (For $20) and encounter another type of man from another generation who actually has reverence for scripture, God and coherence. So refreshing. SO REFRESHING!

Not ALL the theology checks out, the text is a little dated, the hymns and poetry are a little hokey... but the perspective! Written from the heart of a man who loves God and reveres His every word. And most importantly, this man understands the book of Romans theologically/devotionally. (Never mind the endless quibbles about the Greek, the word use, the contrast with Galatians, chronology, etc.) Reminds you of the time theologians received the Word with their heart and mind... not as an intellectual game board with (highly speculative) winners and losers.

A monumental work. Thank you CDB for publishing it.

Barnhouse has surprised me with his boldness and willingness to place Truth above popularity. This is the sign of a man of God that needeth not be ashamed. His illustrations bring the point home in ways that make recall easy. Romans is a thorough and systematic study of the Christian life and faith from the Fall to the Finish encapsulated and presented in an orderly, understandable progression. I believe it gives the book of Romans honor where honor is due. If you don't understand Romans, you don't understand your faith. This book will bring light and answers to many questions you have. Its worth your investment.
