What you don't know about yourself can hurt you--and your relationships, and how you make your way in the world. It can also keep you in the shallows with God. Do you want help figuring out who you are and why you repeatedly stumble into the same self-defeating patterns? Consider the ancient personality type system called the Enneagram.
This unique, narrative-based approach allows you to see and experience the world through the eyes of people who represent each of the Enneagram types. That it's funny and full of stories means you'll keep turning the pages long after you read the chapter on your own number. "Cron and Stabile walk through the Enneagram's nine different personality types and their distinct ways of seeing the world, showing how each one has a potentially infinite number of expressions, strengths, and weaknesses. Cron describes his own Enneagram experience as a feeling of waking up after having been asleep for a long time. He explains that in catching a glimpse of the person he was created to be, he began to see himself with the same delight, pride, and expectation with which God sees him, and to sense the immediacy of God's grace. 'In the spiritual life that's no small thing,' he writes."
"What would you give to crack the biggest mystery in the world: Yourself? Why do we act, think, feel, and believe the way we do? I know of no better tool than the Enneagram. And I know of no better teachers of this tool than my friends Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile. I use the Enneagram in my business and personal life every day. The Road Back to You will open your eyes to the depths of your heart."
"Cron brings his witty, energetic voice to this collaboration with Stabile, a retreat director and expert on the Enneagrama system of personality typology with roots in Christian and Islamic mysticism. The beauty of the Enneagram is its charity: the system clearly names the flaws as well as the virtues of each personality type. The Enneagram also counsels humility and acknowledges its own limits ('[The Enneagram] is not infallible or inerrant,' writes Cron and Stabile)a welcome modesty in religious understanding today."
"With The Road Back to You, the small number of books I recommend to absolutely everyone has increased by one. You couldn't ask for a better introduction to the Enneagram than what's found in this book and you couldn't ask for better guides than Cron and Stabile. If a modicum of self-awareness is needed to navigate life these days, let this book be your map."
"Armed with delightful but incisive wit, Cron and Stabile help us explore our inner life by making the mystery of the Enneagram accessible. If you want to better understand yourself and those in the world around you, this insightful and brilliant book is a perfect place to begin."
"The Enneagram has been a vital tool in my own personal journey of self-discovery, and The Road Back to You does a great job of making this ancient tool accessible for the modern Christian."
"A must-read for all and a companion guide for a lifelong journey to live generatively. A book full of wisdom, discernment, and humor, The Road Back to You creates a path toward home ever so gently and joyfully."
"Ian Morgan Cron, partnering with Suzanne Stabile, has gifted us with another timely and brilliantly written book. We've long needed a fresh, spiritually grounded approach to helping people grow in self-knowledge and compassion. This is a winsome and thoughtful primer!"
"As a newbie to the Enneagram, The Road Back to You offered a delightful and accessible way to honestly examine my own motivations and consider the best path toward growth and flourishing. This book is a must-read for those who seek to not only understand themselves better, but those closest to them, as well."
"There is a special place in my heart for books that help me be a better me. In this book, Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile have delivered on their promise to provide a roadmap to self. The Road Back to You will help you find youall over again and for the first time."
"The Enneagram has been a powerful tool for spiritual transformation in my life, so much so that I became a certified trainer. I've read many of the books available on the subject. This is a wonderfully thorough examination of the Enneagram and the best news is that it will speak to both newcomers and Enneagram veterans."
TeamOtto5 Stars Out Of 5New To the Enneagram? Start Here!December 7, 2017TeamOttoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I began this book fully expecting a helpful, approachable guide to the 9 personality types of the enneagram. What I wasn't expecting was the humor on every page. There are many books out there on the enneagram, but none of them have the light-hearted, playful approach to personal growth and transformation that this one does. There is often a sense of discouragement, if not despair, that comes with zeroing in on your enneagram type, but this book does a great job of leading the reader gently through this territory, emphasizing that we are all in the same boat and reminding us that every type has strengths which, without the healing light of truth and the warmth of God's love, can become the very places we get stuck. Even if you know nothing about the enneagram or have struggled to identify your type, you will surely recognize yourself in the pages of this delightful book.
Paul Smith5 Stars Out Of 5Good Introduction to the EnneagramJanuary 19, 2017Paul SmithQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a very good introduction to the Enneagram - deep enough to be valuable, but not so deep as to be unreadable. I have a number of books on the subject, and this one is by far the most approachable. If you want in-depth explanations and all the possible permutations within the enneagram, this is not the book, but if you are just curious about the enneagram, or want to dip your toe into the water to see if it is safe, this is the book to begin.

Enneagram: Any a gram
Named for a nine-sided polygon, the Enneagram distinguishes and describes nine facets of the human personality, nine different ways of being, nine unique manifestations of the image of God on this planet. In The Road Back to You, Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile provide a clear, humorous, and sensitive road map for the journey of self-discovery that happens while studying the Enneagram.
Heres a summary of all nine types and connections:
Its important to note that with the Enneagram, motivation determines type. So, for example, if I believe that a friend is feeling sad, I may reach out to her with a phone call for various reasons:
If I call because I see myself as a champion of the sad and despondent, I may be an 8.
If Im motivated by a desire to comfort and to create a safe space for that friend, I am likely a 2.
If I join my sad friend in her place of sadness and mirror the entire range of her emotions, I am probably a 4.
The way we take in information has a huge impact on the way we see the world, and the Enneagram provides a framework for understanding this, as well as a new vocabulary for expressing ourselves, for living alongside others, and for delighting in the mystery of our individuality.
To be honest, Im not entirely settled on my Enneagram number. I kept hoping that Ian and Suzanne would say, And if every time you read about one of the types, you think you ARE that type (or at least have all its weaknesses), then you are a _______. (They didnt say that ever.)
Its also important to understand that the Enneagram types are not convenient pigeon holes for filing yourself and all your friends into neat little Bento boxes, and this is one of the strengths of the concept. Because human beings operate at all levels of health and dysfunction, not all Type 1 Perfectionists are on a mission to make over the entire universe in their own image. Not all Eights are bent on world domination.
If you are curious about your type, you can take an online quiz, but then you will need to do some further reading and research to discover what significance that number has for you. Suzanne and Ian have also produced a podcast with an abundance of helpful information.
Additionally, its important to note that each Enneagram type will manifest characteristics of a neighbor number. This is referred to as your wing. For example, when I took the online test, it determined that I am most likely a 3 with a 4 wing (3w4). If I were a 3w2, I would be much more charming and intimate, but I would also drive my friends crazy trying to be the star of every show. As a 3w4 (if thats what I really am), I am introspective and more authentic than the 3w2, but also more conflicted.
Of course, knowing all this wont change who I am, but it does give me an understanding of the raw material Im working with so that I can get out of my own way and become a God-honoring version of a 3w4, trusting for grace to deal with the weaknesses, and capitalizing on the strengths that are there.
The Ennegram is also a helpful tool for understanding how others are viewing the world. Suzanne and Ian have said it well:
The Enneagram shows us that we cant change the way other people see, but we can try to experience the world through their eyes and help them change what they do with what they see.
The authors have also provided a field guide for understanding the other types with a What Its Like to Be a _________ at the beginning of each types chapter. Eye-opening!
It is clear that the Enneagram doesnt just provide numbers attached to numerical excuses for us to stay in our present ruts or unhealthy behavior patterns. Understanding my weakness and frailty is true self-awareness. It is also a call to spiritual transformation. Thomas Merton has said, For me to be a saint means to be myself. While this may be overstating the point, its not by much, for if my efforts to be a saint pull me into a personality that is not my own, but rather some concoction of traits that Ive admired in those I consider to be saints, Im doomed to jettison myself out of that ill-fitting craft and conclude that sainthood is just not for me. The beauty of self-understanding is the knowledge that saints come in all types and sainthood is as various and multi-colored as the creative genius of God.
The Road Back to You begins and ends with a blessing for the journey, words spoken over those who are about to wake up to the wonder of discovering the true self, and to find more of God in the process:
May you recognize in your life the presence, power, and light of your soul.
May you realize that you are never alone, that your soul in its brightness and belonging connects you intimately with the rhythm of the universe.
May you have respect for your individuality and difference.
May you realize that the shape of your soul is unique, that you have a special destiny here, that behind the faade of your life there is something beautiful and eternal happening.
May you learn to see yourself with the same delight, pride, and expectation with which God sees you in every moment.
Let it be so.
