Brianna5 Stars Out Of 5Book Review: Rising Above a Toxic WorkplaceFebruary 15, 2016BriannaQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I chose to read Rising Above a Toxic Workplace by Gary Chapman, Paul White, and Harold Myra because I have worked in a variety of positive and negative environments. The title grabbed my attention and increased my interest in learning ways to work effectively in a negative environment.
Rising Above a Toxic Workplace is written in an easily-read, story-telling form. By compiling information from many interviews and including specific stories, Chapman, White, and Myra provide their readers with examples of how to move beyond simply going through the motions of workday after workday. They use varying stories of successful and unsuccessful choices to encourage their readers to make purposeful decisions instead of wallowing in self-pity.
Each chapter in Rising Above a Toxic Workplace includes suggestions of other books to read, encouraging and challenging quotes, and several questions for self-reflection or group discussion. The end of the book also includes a Survival Guide and Toolkit which further delineates how to recognize and deal with a toxic environment, including when to leave the environment. Throughout the book, Chapman, White and Myra offer realistic suggestions that readers can relate to and understand. I believe Rising Above a Toxic Workplace would be an excellent read for all workers, including leaders, managers, and staff, because Chapman, White, and Myra emphasize how each persons actions can influence an environment for the better or for the worse.
