Series: Finding Sanctuary
Sophie Wittenbauer left her strict Mennonite hometown under a cloud of shame and regret. After a rough childhood, her teenage poor choices harmed others, leaving her with no choice but to change her life. Her entry-level writing job at a newspaper puts her in the right place at the right time to overhear office gossip about a prisoner who has information on a decades-old unsolved crime. While the other reporters write off the tip as the ravings of an angry criminal, Sophie can't ignore it because she knows the name of this prisoner from her old life.
Upon learning from the man that one of the other suspects is hiding out in the Missouri town of Sanctuary, she takes on a false identity to investigate and meets the young pastor of a local church--the very man she'd loved as a troubled teenager. As she gets closer to finding the suspect, will the truth of her own past come out before she discovers the identity of the criminal--or the very person she's seeking puts a fatal stop to her investigation?

"I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, RISING DARKNESS is the third and final book in Ms. Mehl's Finding Sanctuary series. If you missed the first two, they are: Gathering Shadows, Deadly Echoes, and RISING DARKNESS. The stories do stand alone, although they are set in the same small town community and have some overlapping characters.
I greatly enjoyed this story. After I read Deadly Echoes I hoped Jonathon would be the hero in this book -- and yay, he was! I enjoyed to getting to know him and Sophie. At first she bothered me, with her disbelief in God and her New Age beliefs, but there were a lot of good faith messages in there and she grew to trust.
I did mostly have the story figured out -- who-dun-it and why, but not everything. There were some surprise twists at the end that I didn't see coming.
If you love romantic suspense, you will love RISING DARKNESS. It was a great story. It held my interest all the way through, and the romance element was believable and present.

Finding Sanctuary #3
By Nancy Mehl
Sophie Bauer has left her past and the pain and shame behind, at least she's working on it. And she's created a whole new identity to go with her new life. And she thinks she's discovered how to firmly grasp the life she's seeking.
When she hears that a long thought dead fugitive may have taken up residence in the small town of Sanctuary, Missouri, Sophie jumps at the chance to get the story of a lifetime. But the scoop that she's expecting may not be the one she gets, especially when she meets a face from her past.
As Sophie works her way towards finding a murderer, she finds her own safety as well as her heart in danger. With the clock ticking down Sophie work through the questions of the past to find the truth. But someone seems to have taken an interest in Sophie's reasons for being in Sanctuary and they just might uncover the truth before Sophie.
Suspense and intense drama what's not to love? If you are new to the series you will be seeing Sanctuary through Sophie's perspective rather than that of the author, but there is nothing wrong with this as one can read this book and follow along as the various characters are introduced.
I was provided a copy of this book through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.
nkwbookreviewer4 Stars Out Of 5Book 3 or Stand AloneJuly 18, 2016nkwbookreviewerQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Rising Darkness is book three in author Nancy Mehl's Finding Sanctuary series. This 320 page paperback is published by Bethany House Publishers and is a real suspenseful page turner. This book can be read as a stand alone, but after reading it you will probably be like me and want to read the other two.
Mehl is a good author. I love the depth of her characters. Main character, Sophie Bauer (formerly known as Wittenbauer) comes from a strict Mennonite home in Kingdom. Her parents were abusive, unclean people who shamed Sophie and made her clean their home. At 16 she was forced to quit school, dashing her hopes of becoming a crime reporter. At 18 she is able to run away from her dysfunctional home and get her GED. This leads to college and an internship at the St. Louis Times newspaper. That's where she gets information on a criminal case and goes under cover looking for him. She changes her name to Emily in order to hide her identity in this nearby Mennonite town of Sanctuary. In Sanctuary she runs into Jonathan, her childhood boyfriend. He is the town's minister and makes a great character.
This is a mystery peppered with a lot of inspirational messages in it. I love that in a Christian novel. It talks about God, His purpose, and faith. It has romance and suspense. The love story is very believable. The mystery and suspense have readers guessing. The action and dialogue flow smoothly making the book roll along at an easy pace. The descriptions are good and took me right into the middle of all of the drama and intrigue.
I would recommend it to anyone that likes romantic, Christian mysteries. It got a four out of five star rating from me. I received a copy of this book for my honest review from The Book Club Network.
pautoyoung5 Stars Out Of 5Finding a SanctuaryJune 21, 2016pautoyoungQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Rising Darkness, Book 3 in the Finding Sanctuary series, by Nancy Mehl is an excellently written romantic novel full of suspense. The characters are well developed, and the storyline has enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested to the very end of the book. After changing her last name from Wittenbauer to Bauer, Sophie has been living and working as a reporter in St. Louis, Missouri trying to escape the painful memories of her neglectful and abusive Mennonite parents. All she wants to do is forget her past and the God who she doesnt see as a loving father since he didnt rescue her from her dysfunctional family. Sophie wants to write more than about food and obituaries and desires to become a crime writer. She discovers a lead to the possible life and whereabouts of a murderer who stole a large sum of money and had been presumed dead and decides to travel to the Mennonite town of Sanctuary to find him. Is this famous murderer finding his own sanctuary in this small town? If so, if Sophie can find him, she will have the story of the decade! Once there, this place reminding her of her childhood, Sophie must face the memories of her past. To beat it all, she runs right into a local pastor, a man whom she grew up with and had a crush on in her hometown. Will these two find the culprit together? With Sophies past, can there ever be hope for the two as a couple? The novel keeps you guessing right up to the conclusion of the book on the outcome. Can Sophie ever forgive God and accept His love? I definitely recommend this novel to anyone. I received a copy from the author and publisher of The Book Club Network in exchange for an honest review.
Cindy Loven4 Stars Out Of 5Rising DarknessMay 31, 2016Cindy LovenQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I should start by saying I was positive I reviewed this book, but when I search the files it was not in them, so here we go again. Nancy Mehl is and has been a favorite suspense author for a while. That said, I struggled to get into this book, but hung in there and was so happy I did. Sophie was a little off the cusp, doing things you wouldn't expect for someone in her position to do, but she gave the story that twist it needed. While Sanctuary is a great place to read about, I am not sure I would want to live there, A bit close minded and cliquish, in that small town secluded from the rest of the world. This book will stand alone but reading the others in the series is helpful. 4 stars from this reviewer. This book was provided for review purposes only, no payment was received for this review.
