"Married couples could have no greater allies than David and Lisa Frisbie. Their writing has helped untold couples confront and overcome issues that would keep their marriages from being all they can be. As a person who is delighted to know them personally, I recommend their work wholeheartedly."
-Larry Morris, Adult Ministries Director, Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International
"We've watched and respected David and Lisa's marriage for many years. He delivered our wedding sermon over three years ago and we still talk about it to this day. We suspect that reading this book will provide you with a similar experience."
-Christopher and Julie Rice
"I am delighted to commend the work of Dr. David and Lisa Frisbie, who have a rich background working with Christian couples. They have learned to listen carefully, think insightfully, and write empathetically about marriage and family."
-Gerard Reed, PhD, Professor and author, Point Loma Nazarene University

I own a variety of premarriage counseling books, most of which follow a fairly typical pattern. They seem to be written by concrete-sequential, logical thinkers --- people who believe that "fill in the blank" or "take the survey" is good enough to suffice.
I am watching marriage after marriage crumble and end --- many in the first few years. And I'm talking about inside the church, not outside its doors. What the survey-type counseling "packages" seem to miss is this: Why do marriages end? What are the key issues? Which of these issues can be prevented by a deeper, more comprehensive approach to counseling with couples before they marry?
Frankly, I was blown away by both of the sex chapters in this book. One looks back at each person's sexual history and experiences, the other looks forward and considers what each person expects married sex to be and become. This book is surprisingly candid for a "Christian book" --- not in bad taste, and not beyond the boundaries --- but it goes farther than I'm used to seeing in faith-based literature.
The chapters on power, again two chapters on this topic, should be must-reading for any woman who wants to get married. If you have a daughter who is considering marriage --- buy her this book and start her on those two chapters. Amazing, inspired, deeper, fully Christian but committed to equality and mutual servanthood. The best discussion I've seen --- anywhere --- about power issues in the context of a Godly, Scriptural marriage. Very well done.
If you want to counsel couples without having to think -- like plug in a DVD, pass out a survey, send in results for a computer score --- this is not the book for you. If you want to help create marriages that endure and thrive and grow --- insteading of crashing and burning --- this is by far the best book I've seen for that purpose. This is a deeper, fuller, more expressive approach to premarital counseling. Although only time will tell, I believe this is the wisest approach that LPC's, MFT's and pastors/ministers could possibly follow.
Five stars for the chapters on power and sex --- and the other chapters also. (Ten chapters total, plus numerous questions for reflection and study.)

Tell us a little about yourself. We are family counselors based in Southern California, authors of 14 books about marriage and family life. We write articles for "Thriving Family" and "ParentLife" magazines, among others. We love marriages thrive and families be healthy!
What was your motivation behind this project? Marriages are falling apart; many are opting to not even get married in the first place. How can we help a couple plan to "go the distance?" What does a couple need to know and do "right from the start" to have a healthy relationship?
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Our title has two meanings: 1) Things you need to know "right from the start" and 2) Getting your marriage "right" from the start It's a great book for dating and engaged couples, and it's very helpful for early-married couples too!
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? This was a life-changing project for us! We sat down with engaged and early married couples across western and eastern Europe, Canada, all over the united states. We learned so much! Here's what you need to know "right from the start"...
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? David reads Larry Osborne and Don Miller. Lisa reads Francine Rivers, Elizabeth George, and Stormie O'Martian. These are a few of our favorite writers --- we have many more! Both of us are avid readers and writers: our house like a library! :)
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: David is an ordained minister and has performed more than 350 weddings worldwide. He teaches family studies at Southern Nazarene University and has taught and lectured in premarital counseling at colleges and seminaries literally around the world.
