Publisher's Description

Some doors were never meant to be opened. Some tales were never meant to be set free. When seventeen-year-old Sahara O’Saughnessy discovers a rift into the realm of lore, the most haunting stories she’s been telling her friends come to life, and she must find a way to stop them before they tear her world apart. RIFT explores loss, longing, and courage with spine-chilling suspense. Set within the Appalachian Mountains, it walks the boundaries between the known and the unknown.

Editorial Reviews

I don't know what magic Steven James poured into this novel but I was enthralled from the second I started. I finished the entire book in 2 hours, could not put it down for a second. Sahara, our FMC, takes us through this eerie, haunting, and unsettling story where nothing is as it seems. The folkloric atmosphere, the towns deep past, our FMC own tragic backstory. And a cliff hanger! I need the second book immediately. A spooky read, perfect for Halloween.

This was a new author for me. This is a YA genre, I often read those because I find the stories interesting. This book grabbed me from the very beginning and didn’t let me go until the very end. I was turning Pages so fast and enjoying this book and the supernatural element as well as the folklore element and all of the suspense. The ending is a great cliffhanger, and even though I am disappointed that it didn’t answer the questions I had, it definitely has me putting the second and third book on my list for reading! I liked all the characters, the setting of the book and the storyline and I highly recommend!

Have you ever wondered how fine the line is between reality and the obscure? Rift explores this concept in a very suspenseful and thrilling way! Sahara, the main character, tells us an incredible story littered with courage, guilt, and faith, while she struggles with her own personal loss. She is indeed a riveting character whom is easy to identify with as a reader.

I absolutely could not put this book down! The pages flew by and I kept wanting more! The storyline is super intriguing and the novel wraps up with a climactic cliffhanger! Truly an excellent YA novel and series beginner! I cannot wait to read the next book in this trilogy!

Rift marks an enthralling entry into the young adult horror genre, skillfully crafted by award-winning thriller novelist Steven James. This haunting tale intertwines folklore and the supernatural, drawing readers into a world where the boundaries of reality are tested and the darkest stories come to life.

The protagonist, seventeen-year-old Sahara O’Saughnessy, is a relatable and complex character grappling with themes of loss and guilt. Her discovery of a rift that opens into the realm of folklore is both a thrilling plot device and a powerful metaphor for the haunting nature of her past. As the tales she has shared with friends materialize in terrifying ways, Sahara is thrust into a race against time to confront the consequences of her storytelling and the shadows that linger in her life.

James masterfully blends heart-wrenching moments with chilling suspense, ensuring that readers are both emotionally invested and on the edge of their seats. The author’s ability to create an atmospheric setting in the haunted hills of East Tennessee enhances the novel’s eerie tone, immersing readers in a landscape steeped in folklore and mystery. The vivid descriptions transport you to a world where legends come alive, making the rural backdrop almost a character in its own right.

One of the novel's strengths is its exploration of the fragility of the human spirit. Sahara's journey is not just about battling external horrors but also about confronting her inner demons and finding the courage to face her past. This duality adds depth to the narrative, transforming it from a straightforward horror story into a poignant exploration of growth and resilience.

The pacing of Rift is expertly handled, with moments of tension balanced by introspective passages that allow readers to connect with Sahara’s emotional struggles. The folklore elements are seamlessly woven into the plot, providing a rich tapestry of chilling tales that enhance the sense of dread and intrigue.

As Sahara navigates the consequences of her actions, readers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of fear, empathy, and empowerment. The climax is both satisfying and thought-provoking, leaving readers contemplating the lasting impact of stories and the choices we make.

In conclusion, Rift is a compelling addition to the young adult horror genre that deftly combines folklore, suspense, and emotional depth. Steven James has created an unforgettable journey that resonates with themes of loss and courage, making it a must-read for fans of horror and coming-of-age stories alike. Prepare to be captivated and chilled as you venture into the haunted realms of Rift!
